Engine protection?

Hi!

First, I'm sorry my terrible English!
I read a post in a national forum, that after first 3000 km, the engine protection will unlock, and the performance of engine will increase. Is that possible? Are there any experiences?
Our car is a 500L, 1.4, 95 hp, this is new car, I went him 1800 km so far.

I'm not aware of any specific "unlock" function, but it's not unusual for a car to take 1500-3000km to "run in"and reach normal performance. This is the moving parts wearing very slightly and the ECU adjusting to the particular engine and system.

gyorgyh,
Robert is absolutely correct about the 'running in' .. that just means 'take it easy' for a while. No hard acceleration and no continuous high speeds.

There's probably no need to 'run in' a modern engine .. but .. treat it with respect and the car will be a lot better.

In the 1960s and 1970s car manufacturers used to recommend a 'running in period' ... 30 miles per hour for the first 200 miles, then 50 miles per hours for a further 200 miles ... until the engine was 'run in'... the moving parts of the engine/gearbox/car worked smoothly together.

I have used www.translate.google.com to translate my English into Hungarian. I guess it is a complete nonsense..?

Sometimes I feel intelligent, but it soon passes ..
Néha intelligensnek érzem magam, de hamarosan átmegy ..

Re: Engine protection?

OK Guys, I understand! FIAT seller told me, until first 3000-5000 km no press hard, then bring the car back and oil and filter needs to exchange.
Thank You all for the replies!

Re: Engine protection?

There is definitely some kind of performance cap on the engine and I think it lifts in stages.
Ours is a 1.4 petrol and there was a noticeable increase in performance at 1000, 2500, and 5000 on ours. It was like someone had flicked a switch.
Below the 1000km it felt awful very strained and noisy and wouldn't rev over 3.5k RPM I can see why people take the 1.4 for a test drive and hate it if its a low mileage one.

What I though was going to be a fairly lacklustre car but was prepared to live with it as we needed it for running the grand kids about has turned out to have quite sparkly performance and seriously good MPG. very quiet and refined now too.

Re: Engine protection?

Couldn't agree more muttleysdad 👍

The lowest mpg we see is 37-38mpg around town but that goes upto 45-50mpg on combined journeys and our overall average consumption is 43.8mpg which I feel is ok for 1st 5k miles.
