Can anyone recommend me if the fiat 500l 1.4 petrol as any issues or what to look for as am thinking of buying one ?

Hi our 500l mpw has the 1.6 diesel which is fine but noisy our other car is a fiat IDEA 1.4 petrol and has the same engine as the 500l 1.4 and we find it ok for about town but not so good on the motorway because you have rev it hard even in sixth gear, over all it is somewhat gutless so definitely have good test drive up hills and at speed to be sure the 1,4 is ok for you. I do not know if the 500l is available with the 1.6 Etorque, it will use more petrol but would I think be a better drive. Our 1.6 diesel 120 is great loads of grunt but is noisy and will not like short journeys which will clog the dpf, I have not driven the 1.3 diesel others on here like theirs but again it would not like short commutes.

Thanks I did not know that the idea as the same engine . I always liked the idea just to small for me . Family ?

Yes there is a lot of the Idea is in the 500l the rear seats and folding mechanism electric window switches engines and gearboxes ect and that’s no bad thing as our Idea has been reliable just a bit to small for a family but a good second car, the 500l fixes all that as it has good sized boot and is very roomy inside, the ride is really quite good. Picking the right engine is a problem because it really needs a stronger engine than the 1.416v. Other countries get a turbo version which would be perfect having said that the 1.4 would fine for trips to tescos and chocked urban roads as well as those short commutes.

I might even get the 1.3 diesel because it has no cam belt depends on colour I find . I need to change my fiat marea have had it 10 years now it's been really reliable just hope my next fiat is the same?

I had the 500L with the small 1.3 l diesel on vacation in Italy, and I was delighted and afterwards bought the 500L, but with the bigger 1.6 diesel. I have to say that the bigger diesel is more noisy and not as agile, it feels a bit nose heavy. I think the 1.3 l diesel would be a good choice.

btw don't expect the same reliability as for the Marea. I think the Marea (my wife had one) was one of the most reliable Fiats in the last 20 years or so. Here in Austria you could see Mareas on the streets for a long time (even the Stilos had vanished from the streets earlier). I think the build quality and the quality of materials is not really great on the 500L.

Yes you are right about the marea I have had one for 10 years just a remarkable car . Never had a car like this before . Sometimes am just hoping it will just stop . So I can get rid .

Hi looks like Fiat are giving the 500l a face lift this year which aside from revised head lights and tail lights also gets the 1.4 turbo petrol engine 120bhp?
I think this might be a good choice.

Hi can't wait to see the new front end so long they cou l make it a bit more attractive like the panda ?

Hi with a bit of look I should have atteched pictures of head and tail lights.

I think so just head ,tail lights, slight changes to the front bumper and from what I have read some engines from the 500x plus some better plastics ect and dash changes they might even sort out the position of those dials so you can see them?. I have read that Fiat are laying of a third of the factories staff as sale's have dipped, they should have sorted out the 500l's wrongs sooner.

They seem to lose value quickly that's way am waiting to find a bargain . Had have a tipo if they had come out earlier but still a bit dear for my budget?

Hi unfortunately for the UK we are stuck with 1.4 16v95 bhp which does not have enough grunt!.It might have helped UK sales if Fiat gave a better choice of engines and transmitions. For some people the 1.6 etorque with a proper auto box would be atractive and a manual 1.4 turbo 120 would also be fine. The best engine available here is the 1.6 120 diesle but it is noisey and does take some warming up these cold mornings.Going back to picking up a second hand 500l bargain that might not be easy, the reason I baught our car new (prereg) was that It seamed to me that even six year old suitable cars were fetching high prices even the earliest 500l's are £7000.

Hi,
ok, didnt know that the 1.4 120 bhp is not available in the UK.
It seems that this engine is not very efficient though. The german website Spritmonitor shows average fuel consumptions of 7.3 l/100 km for the 95 bhp version but 8,8 l/100 km (32 mpg) for the 120 bhp version - 20 % more. I would say that is too much for such a small car.

Go to Arnold Clark you will get a great deal on used or nearly new 500L, I have the 1.3 diesel auto trekking it's brilliant car. New it would have been 25k but I got it for 10k!! Bargain
