OK - so it appears to be a letter A in a circle ( different to my S/S symbol)
no idea.., have you got an owners manual..?? I've not got an L or an X..
:idea: can you switch off the S/S , and see if the symbol disappears / then reappears at the press of a button.

My manual says this is the warning light for a defective electric steering system. It says that if this warning light goes on, you have to be aware that the steering support may fail, and you should see your mechanic immediately.

Thanks Franz I will check this out, my manual doesn't show this warning light.
So I have found this online which seems to show its the stop start system, we bought the car from car people so back there it goes , incidentally spoke to local Fiat dealer and they were far from helpful and basically take it back to where we bought it, unfortunately it only comes with 30 day warranty from car people and that's nearly up.

you are aware that you can buy warranties privately..at reasonable rates for nearly new - low mileage cars.

Hi Charlie , I'm told fiat give a 3 year warranty anyway so I expect stuff like this to be covered by the manufacturer, will report back once the car has been looked at.
It is interesting , seems there are country specific differences. My 500L also has S+S but there is no such warning symbol described in the manual. The only sign with an exclamation is the one regarding the power steering. But it looks a bit different.

Car been to main dealer today, just needed battery charging apparently common problem in winter , voltage dropping causing error message on stop start.
