I recently bought a new 500L 1.4 T-jet and there is a subsound.
Shortly after you start driving there is a buzzing and whining noise.
It occurs after about 30 seconds and driving in 2, 3 or 4 gear at say 1750-2000 rpm.
The sound disappaers directly when you release the throttle just a bit and also when (with your other foot) you put just a liltle pressure on the brake pedal.
So when the vacuum of the inletmanifold changes the sound disappears
The garage changed already a few parts (dump valve ) but with no succes.

The sound appears 2 to 3 times and then no more.
But: when you switch off the egine (as to fill the fuel tank) then it is there again. When you continue driving you do`nt hear it anymore.

Anybody an idea?

Hi Peter

I have this issue with mine and it was driving me crazy. I had a few different technicians out with me to hear the sound but they told me they could not hear it. This has been going on for well over a year now. Whatever it is, it did clear up for about a week but then it came back. I cannot say mine is timed specific but I can tell you from where I leave my house or leaving work exactly where the noise will kick in. I probably will mention it again when it is due its next service but as I only have a little over a year left I have given up hope of a fix (whatever the hell it is) and am now just trying to ignore it.

If it is the same as mine (sure it is) it will be a hard fix as it's not something a technician will be able to pick up quickly with the short duration the noise goes on for.

I would say maybe take it back and see if they can find an issue/fault. The issue has been logged then. I have found nothing after nearly 2 years of this going on that it has affected the car in any way.

Hi there,

Next Wednesday our car goes to the dealer and a technician of the Fiat Importer will have look at it and I really hope they will find it.
I know there is not really something wrong with the car but in the almost 45 years that I drive a Fiat I never had a noise like that.
I will let you know!

Hi Peter
Would be much appreciated if you can let me know how you get on. If it is anything like the different technicians that came out with mine then it will amount to nothing but fingers crossed for you (y)

Add ours to the list, you can only hear it properly from the drivers seat too

After having locked mine in the garage, there is a high pitched whine which appears to come from under the bonnet, for about 30 seconds, then silence. I've not heard the noise at any other time, and there do not appear to be any problems as a result of this noise, so I've just assumed it might be something involving the central locking, and have not worried about it.
Keith.

Unfortunately the Fiat technician could not locate the problem and from the dealer I heard that due to the minor volume and the short time off the subsound they will not spend anymore hours in the problem.

I don`t agree with that as I drive Fiats for over fourty years and never encountered a similar problem.

By the way: I am Dutch and hope my English is well enough :)

Thought this might be the case. Whilst it is not good from the dealer or Fiat I do understand as the issue will be an absolute nightmare to find. I also feel that constantly stopping and starting the car is probably not the greatest of things to be doing. For this reason I have given up all hope of ever finding a fix and just try to ignore it now.

A week ago I was called by the Fiat dealer because they received a service bulletin about an update of the ABS computer for 500 L `s until a certain production. The reason of the update described exactly the noise and circumstances of the problem I encountered. Unfortunately that in our case the update was not succesful. The noise does appears later so there is a slight difference.

Thanks for the update.

Would be great to get rid of this but as mentioned previously I have given up all hope and am living with it. Still annoying but what else can we do?
