Hi guys..
So, 6,500 miles into my new 500L PopStar 1.3 MultiJet. very happy. But I do have a question.
The dealer sticker for a service is for 12,000 miles, or one year, whichever comes closer. But I am worried about the engine oil. Does it not need to be changed? Surely a new engine will have loads of metal crap in the sump, and bedding in will cause the oil to be worked harder.
I am an easy driver, no high revving, I let the car warm up before I go.
Can anyone advise, should I go ahead and do it myself, before the dealer allocated service, or should I just wait?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Psymanbee,

You can choose to change the oil and filter whenever you like. If you are not comfortable waiting until 12,000 miles to change it then by all means go ahead and get it done. It's your car after all:)

Just make sure you use the correct spec of oil as stated in your manual (some people will advise against paying the premium for the recommended Selenia oil, but I have always used it for piece of mind, especially whilst the car is still under warranty) as well as a genuine Fiat oil filter. A great place to start is Shop4Parts; you can search for the specific parts for your car on there, and they are always on hand to help with any queries.

If you know what you are doing then I guess there is no reason why you couldn't just do it yourself, but maybe for the sake of being squeaky clean with the warranty get a VAT registered garage to do the job for you.

I am from the old school when cars were better when they were run in. As I worked in the motor cycle trade I learnt that as time has gone on. The engineering tollerances have improved. To the point where only a short run in should be needed. In theory you should not have any metal crap. Another issue is the oils, if it is fitted with fully syth oil, the wear again will be hardly any. I would have thought that the manufactures fit a oil that would allow the engine to bed in.
If it was my car, I would change the oil for a good name brand, keep away from comma. Now days the oil spec is so good that you can leave it longer than normal. I have done 50k on my motorcycle using semi syth. The engine is still in very good condition.
hope that helps
Vincenzo
