General Fiat 500l 1.3 diesel service intervals

General Fiat 500l 1.3 diesel service intervals

Hi can anyone tell me the service intervals please as I cant seem to fing it in my book

Check out page 225 of the owners manual.

It's every 21,000 miles or 24 months for diesel versions.

The frequency in months is the same as the petrol versions but two years seems a long time to me. Our dealer scheduled our first service at 1 year (which doesn't coincide with the intervals stated in the owners manual.)

1.3 MJD, are every two years for full service and every year for oil & filter change. The oil /filter change being most important, as failure to change the oil (or the incorrect oil) has led to cam chain failures, with drastic damage being done to engines.......

This applies to all Fiat engines of this spec, regardless to which vehicle they are fitted.

Cheers Qube O

Makes sense now cheers.

Bear in mind that during 2014 Fiat changed the intervals for all vehicles to 1 year/12,000 miles for diesel and 1 year/9000 miles for petrol. However, even when they did this, they (stupidly) left the oil change interval at the original 2 year interval, so the 1 year 'service' is little more than inspection. You still need to have the yearly inspection to maintain the warranty though, and I personally would get the oil and filter changed at the same time because:

A) the 2 year interval is too long for oil
B) the trip to the dealer is essentially a waste of time just for an inspection

If your car is registered prior to 2014 it'll be on the 2 year schedule but from 2014 onwards you'll need to check in your service book because Fiat changed the schedule part-way through the year.

Personally I'd lean towards yearly oil changes anyway for reasons set out above - particularly on diesels and particularly on the 1.3 diesel because it has a cam chain rather than a belt, and the chain operation is reliant on decent oil, as Qube O mentioned above. I have the 1.3 diesel in an Alfa Romeo MiTo and neither my book or the dealer said it was a requirement of the warranty to have yearly oil changes though - but any decent mechanic would recommend it.

Fiat use fully synthetic. Do what I did, I bought Fiat's recommended oil an told them to put that in (or high quality fully synthetic oil)

I think the engine takes a total of 3 litres of oil, so on that bases with 10% off at shop4parts (via fourm discount code) would bring fiat recommended oil to £27.04

If going for aftermarket oil you will need 5w30

Off topic: I'm looking at a 1.3 500l lounge. What are they like going up hills with full load?

I've currently got a duelogic atm but be a manual 500l 85hp. I can understand that got push a little due to small engine an big car that I don't mind an expect. Thanks for the info :)

Got mine booked in for the 1st service and was told that it is just the oil and filter that would be changed if it needed it. Cost of £164 but will be cheaper if the filter and oil change are not needed.

Not sure if there are many Fiat approved garages locally as I have never even bothered checking. Due to issues a while back Fiat agreed to pay some of the cost of the first service so will wait and see what happens when I send them the bill :)
