Just been looking online for a 500L dog guard and got a bit of a shock to see that they cost at least 130 quid!

Maybe I'm just tight but that seems a lot, I thought maybe about 60 - 70 would have been more like it.

Don't get me wrong if that's the going rate I'll just get one but has anyone else got one? Any recommendations / ones to avoid / best place to look etc etc?

I'm after something decent that will fit properly and won't fall apart after 5 minutes.

Any advice most welcome, many thanks :)

I have only ever bought genuine dog guards (for land rovers though not fiats) and they were similarly expensive. They were however very well made and were very easy to fit.

Unlike the cheaper universal type which were less than substantial. Sorry to be a bit graphic but a largish dog becomes a pretty substantial projectile in an accident and you really don't want one flying into the passenger compartment unrestrained by a poorly made guard (it's not just about keeping a dog out under normal condition )

So my advice, you pays your money and takes your choice :)

Fair enough that's pretty much the conclusion I'd come to.

We inherited our dog a couple of months ago from a deceased family member, we love the little bugger but he's become quite an expensive addition to the family... basket, toys, food, coats, brush, harness, lead, shampoo, chews, grooming bills and now a dog guard for the car... Bloody fortune!!

We have a relatively small Jack Russell so I do know what you mean, people underestimate the cost of dog ownership.

Our little fella rides on the back seat but he wears a harness with a short strap/seat belt clip so he cant move around unrestrained.

Cheers, good call on the harness we went out and bought one today for about 20 quid so we'll see how we get on with it before potentially spending a lot more on a dog guard.

Ours is only a small dog too so as long as he travels ok that way then problem solved and happy days :)

I work on the theory that if you have room on the back seat your dog is better to travel restrained there rather than unrestrained in the cargo area.

Ours sometimes travels on the front passenger seat too, similarly restrained.

I think you made a good call.

If you're still looking for a decent Dog Guard, Professor, my sister has one from a company called Travall in her 500L. Not the cheapest around by any means, but it's very solid and and she's very happy with it. Mainly because it doesn't rattle like the universal ones. Here's the link http://bit.ly/1RctHIT

Thanks Michael, the Travall one looks good, I think that was the first one I saw for £130 which ended in me posting on here!

It does look good quality and if the dog harness turns out to be unsuitable I will invest in one of these guards.

Thanks again for your help.

Have the official Fiat one fitted.

Attaches to the headrest with some hexagonal clamp bars.
Works well. Very happy with it. Easily unbolts if you want to fold the rear seats.
(In fact you must take it off to fold the seats.)

It's actually made by Italian company called Ergotech who also manufacture
unofficially for other makes too.

It is ametal frame with nylon cargo netting.

If you want a more substantial floor-to-ceiling (read expensive) one try Barjo who have a very good rep:

They also do rear hatch guards as well, if you want to turn your boot into a proper
dog crate.
