I'm looking to buy a new car and I love the look and feel of the 500L. I was interested in the Twinair version and when I first started looking on the website, I could do the configuration with the twinair but now it's no longer showing up.
Is the twinair being discontinued? I won't be in a position to order a car for another 2 months or so but would like to know if I'll still be able to get one as it's favourite of all the cars I'm looking at.

If it is not on the configurator I think that suggests it is no longer available.
If it has gone TBH I dont see it as a big loss to the 500L range - the 1.4 Petrol is fine in a 500L but I think the TA wasn't entirely suited to a car of the weight and size of an L.

I'm really not interested in the 1.4 though, fuel economy is not exactly great and thus not a very ecological choice.
I guess we're likely to go for a second hand option then if we do decide that this the car far us.

I think you will find the 1.4 fuel economy is OK (I own and drive one), and certainly better than what has been reported on here on occasions that a TA can achieve.

A Twin Air driven hard (which they encourage you to do) and mounted in a car the size and weight of an L doesn't appear to come close to the figures claimed by FIAT, whereas the 1.4 seems to come closer to its claimed figures in my experience

It is why I suspect it has been dropped in the L.

I believe the TwinAir and 1.4 Turbo 120 have both been pulled from the 500L. To be honest there are no Turbo 120s and only a handful of TwinAir's on AutoTrader, and those i've seen parked up when out & about have nearly all been 1.3 Multijet diesels (either 5 speed manual or Dualogic auto - you can tell when parked because it's the only engine with a 5 speed or dualogic box).

A few others have been 1.6 Multijet diesel or 1.4 16v petrol. I think i've seen a couple of TwinAir's but that's it, so I think Fiat have just discontinued them because hardly anyone bought them. Those who did, didn't seem that impressed with the economy either, so I guess its pointless leaving them available.

I'd drive a 1.4 16v, and if it's no good, try the 1.3 diesel - it feels only marginally slower than the TwinAir (i've driven them) and will return far more MPG, despite the TwinAir's official claims - it's working too hard in the big 500L to get close to the official figures, sadly.

Failing all that, if you want a petrol with a bit more pace, have a look at the 500X - that's available with a 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 140bhp.

Fiat seem to be updating configurator as you cannot build any model at the moment,on the subject of T/A my dealer had one +1.4 delivered for customers both were pop stars what did notice both had drums instead of discs on the rear!

Yes I have just seen a blue lounge with delivery miles at the main dealer and it had drums at the rear What is going on ? What else are they skimping on ?

I know this is an old thread, but having recently bought a used 500L MPW with TA 105 (a rare breed now), I can't help but to chip in.

I think it is unfortunate that TA was dropped in 500L, for the last several years, my mission has been to find a 7-seater family petrol car with 40+ real life mpg. Now finally I can rest.

My take on the car so far:

+ lively, plenty of power. If anybody thinks power is an issue, they haven't driven a TA. Elsewhere in the forum someone commented that driving TA in 500L feels like 1.6 diesel. This is true. The middle range torque is plentiful, making overtaking a breeze.
+ best mpg for a 7-seater petrol car (you can say 5+2 instead of 7 seats, but ok in our case as our 2 kids are still small). I got 40 mpg for mixed use so far.
+ superb to drive, high seating position, excellent visibility

- Weak power/torque at the start of 2nd gear (though plenty at mid rpm). Can't use 2nd gear to pull away at roundabouts/junctions even though the car is still rolling.
- Poor fabric quality on the seats for Pop Star trim. Easily stained and feels like they're skimping.

Overall though, I love the car. £30 tax and low insurance are bonuses. If it proves to be reliable, it could be the best family car we've ever owned.

Two reasons why I think TA was dropped in 500L: public perception that a 2-cyl 0.9L engine is not enough for a family/biggish car, and constant criticism of the large difference between official vs real mpg. Now, I don't know why they dropped TA in 500 as well, I thought they're perfect fit.

I think there maybe an emissions issue with the twin air at the moment. They've withdrawn it on all versions. I don't think it met the new test criteria.
I'm sure it'll be back once they've sorted it out.

An issue with emission is possible, in light of the WLTP introduction to replace the European Driving Cycle test.

However, as of yesterday, Fiat UK configurator website is still offering TA as an engine option in Panda. Maybe a low HP variant? TA comes in 3 variants: 64, 85, and 105 HP.

Only the 85bhp seems to be available on the UK website at the moment - just on the Panda. Fiat had already withdrawn the 105bhp from the 500L (as above) and it's not been available on the 500 configurator for a month or two either - it was previously available in both 85 & 105bhp form in the 500.

Alfa offered the 105bhp version in their MiTo, but that model is now out of production so there's probably little need for the 105bhp version, at least. I'd imagine culling the 85bhp could be a problem though, because it makes up the bulk of sales of the Panda 4x4 versions. They could offer the new 1.0 3cyl FireFly engine instead, but I dunno if the (now elderly) Panda platform could accomodate the FireFly easily enough

Just looked up this new 1.0 3 cyl engine, wikipedia mentions the engine to be used in Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X starting 2018. Does anyone know what does FL mean on the table (see attached)?

120 PS, that's quite impressive (peak power though) ... maybe they'll replace TA 105 with this engine?

I reckon the FL is facelift, which is when they've implemented the new FireFly engines into the ranges. The 1.0 3cyl manual (120bhp) & 1.3 4cyl auto (150bhp) is available in both cars but hopefully the larger engine will be made available with a manual transmission in time.

I'd have thought the 1.0, possibly downtuned, would make a good replacement for the TwinAir 105bhp.

Thought I'll try to get this old thread going:

TwinAir (TA) 85bhp is now available again on Fiat.co.uk configurator, at least for 500 and Panda 4x4. No TA is offered for 500L, seems like.

I've also just noticed that the relatively new engine of FireFly Turbo 1.0 120hp is available for 500X.

I agree with all you've said. We have a TA and it's great. We can get 50mpg+ on the open road and 40 in town. We have the Lounge version and the seats are great, the best in any car we've had and totally kid proof.

Hello there ... good to hear you TA works for your family ... what model do you have? Mine is 2014 500L MPW 7 seater (or 5+2 rather).

Hi

Have one 500L 5+2 too and searched the forums and dont find an answer.

How long miles ou years to change the distribution chain?

Thanks

Hi

How long miles ou years to change the distribution chain?

Hello there,

Did you mean the timing (cam) chain? I believe the idea is that it should last as long as the car.

What year is your 500L TA and how much on the clock?

Hi.

Its an old post ;)

But yes Distribution is the FIAT term for valvetrain

And the chains life is @120,000 miles

Oil quality is key.. as it is oil damped..

Poor tension control:accelerated wear
