Hi,guys.I am a proud owner of a Fiat 500l Trekking for about 10 months now and lately my car started making some strange noise. Squealing noise is coming from the rear wheels, when somebody is getting in the car (I presume it is coming from the shock absorbers) and when driving (slow speeds, like parking-both ways, reversing and going front-ways). My neighbour also has one Fiat 500l and his car is making same noises, but louder and one night I managed to record a sound of his car, while he was parking it.

Didn't have time to go to dealer but I am planning to do that in the next 2 weeks. I am interested if anyone had the same problem,or any idea what could it be?
Thanx

Noise sounds similar to having your brake pads worn down and braking (metal on metal) I have really crappy speakers (my ear is right up against them) on this work computer so I could be completley wrong about the noise

Hi Chips

From your description and the sounds I heard, noise in both directions, my first look would be at what is left of your disc pads, front and rear sets. Naturally followed by a look at the actual discs, take the wheels off for a good look and feel if they are scored or lined. As it didn't appear to be a continuous squeal, I would also look for disc warping. It would only need a small deflection to provide an intermittent squeal as the pads engage with the high spot, if there is one.

Worst case following this is wheel bearings, which is a whole new ball game. Good luck hope that helps?

Mine does the same.
it's worse when it's hot.
It's the brakepads. They are almost touching the discs, and make a sound when i drive slowly. Or backup.

If you try to pull the handbrake in low speeds when the sound appears, it will go away. in 2 minutes:-/

I am pretty sure it will go away after it wear down a little.

2013 500L twinair. 10000 km.

Thanks everyone for reply. Yes,it got worse with higher temperatures.I was thinking about brake pads also.Same thing yesterday-tried pulling handbrake when reversing and it was gone for a minute or so :) Only thing that is confusing me is why is it squeaking when somebody is getting in the back seat...Those must be shock absorbers, because the car is not moving so the pads are out of function,right?...Two gremmlins for the price of one:)
Btw-I am from Serbia, where the Fiat 500l is made. And new cars, produced in 2014, at least the ones sold here are being equiped with rear brake drums instead of discs and pads...Maybe factory had many complaints regarding the sounds from rear wheels. In my building, besides us, 3 more neighbours bought 500l....(I will post a picture from my balcony-beautifull sight, 4 cars, one besides other). And from those 4 cars, 3 are making squealing sound (some louder, some not so loud).

Hi Acikota

It would be interesting to find out how close in th eproduction line your cars with the squeaks were built. bad batch of components or even an individual on the line not assembling the parts correctly. There are many variations that could apply. As I am a reliability engineer this is the extent I would have gone to in investigating what could be termed as a 'family / production / parts' issue. Unfortunately, dealers do not give out much information voluntarily, but they do get technical bulletins that would refer to a common failure or problem that has emerged. That 's why product recalls are initiated. Just an off the wall thought

Hi Hugh,
Well, regarding the production date of those cars, there is no way that my local dealer would give us that kind of info.As far as I can tell, they are months apart (by the chronolgy of their arrival on my parking lot:).
On the other hand, I was in contact with a Fiat dealer from another town( via Serbian Fiat forum) and he checked if there was a recall for my car (because there were some problems with first generation 500l's and their shocks),and he also said that they had some customers with similar sounds on their vehicles and that they had managed to solve that with lubricating and tightening handbrake cable...
PS-sorry for my english...
And this is the view from my balcony :)

Funnily enough ours did this for the first time today, doing a low speed manoeuvre, we have been getting temps. of mid twenties for the last two weeks where we are on holiday, so I too suspect it is temperature related.
