Hi all,

Can anyone confirm the fitment type of the DRL bulb in the 500L. The user manual says a bayonet type bulb but I have read everywhere else its a wedge type. I would go check my car now but its been hammering it down for the last two days.

I want to upgrade the DRLs to LED bulbs for a white light.

Unable to help in fitment type, but fitted PIAA's to the Abarth, Blue bulb but a good white light.

Unlikely to be a wedge, as these are usually no more than 5w and DRL's will be 21w.
If it is like the 500, it will be a standard stop/tail bulb 5/21w, using the 5w filament when the headlights are on.
Your handbook should tell you what bulb is in there.

DRLs are to make people see you and not pull in front of you. Many LEDs are bright and uncomfortable to look at, so annoy people, so might be more likely to pull out. The standard ones appear noticeable, but not aggressive. If mine, I'd leave as is.

I must admit I am inclined to agree some LED DRL's seem ridiculously bright, initially it was just the 'after market' ones that people were adding in strips affixed to the fronts, now however even the standard ones you see fitted by some manufacturers are stupidly bright.

The ones on the new Renaults spring to mind.

Hi all,

I'm only interested in replacing the DRLs that are already on the 500L. I have upgraded my main beams dipped/full to a nice crisp white light and I wanted to update the DRLs to more closely match the white of the new bulbs. Otherwise white and yellow look strange. I live by and commute to work in and around country lanes and unlit B roads so I always like to upgrade my bulbs for safety 1st and of course the added aesthetics is a nice 2nd.

It's fine I think if it's just altering the colour and improving the visibility when driving the problem for me comes when they create light of such intensity that they become a distraction to other drivers/road users, yours sound as if they will not be doing that.

Out of interest what bulbs are you fitting and where are you getting them from?? - plus an idea of cost would be good too.

Cheers...

After having ordered and tried various types of bulbs I settled for the following:

H7 Dipped: Ring Xenon Ultima 120% Pair £15 (Amazon)

DRL replacement for LED bulbs: CANBUS 380 (P21/5W) 27 WHITE SMD LED ERROR FREE BULBS Pair £16.50 (hids-direct.co.uk)

Did either of these generate any sort of 'bulb error' warning on the 500L. I see that they do not guarantee they will be error free and some vehicles may need additional resistors wiring in to avoid OBD error messages.

or were they indeed 'plug and play'

Cheers.

The main bulbs were just regular H7 Halogen bulbs so would never throw up a warning anyway and the LED ones I have not tried yet but a few others have tried them in Punto's and 500's and they have been error free. This doesn't mean the 500Ls canbus won't throw a wobbly but I'll report back when I fit them.

Ah of course re the the H7's - thinking about it I have some Philips ones somewhere that I bought for a previous BM I might hunt them out.

Keep us posted re the LED DRL's

Thanks

Hi all,

As promised a quick review/update on my bulb upgrades. Due to the weather I have not managed to fit the new LED DRL bulbs yet but as soon as I can, I will. In the meantime here is a small review of the H7 Dipped beam bulbs I fitted - Ring Xenon Ultima +120%. As a point of reference I shall compare these bulbs to the Osram Nightbreakers that I have used many times as these are typically considered by many people on many forums including this one to be one of the best of the non-Xenon HID 'regular' bulbs.

The new bulbs fitted in OK, although the 500L bulb removal is physically tough and the manual states removal of the bulb in its bulb holder but that wasn't the car in my lights. The bulb was just in the light hole and clipped in. It needed a lot of force to pull out.

Before I go any further let me make one statement. I have fitted many bulbs to many cars over the years and anyone who thinks a regular Halogen/Xenon gas filled bulb can be as bright and crisp as a xenon bulb is mistaken. it isn't the case. Some get close but they are never as good, so any bulb that is advertise like it is, I would always be sceptical.

Performance

The light is as close to solid xenon white as I have ever seen. If solid white was 100 on a scale then I would award these a 90. They are quite brilliant white with only a hint of warmer white/yellow in them if you look hard. To all intents and purposes to oncoming traffic they look bright white! As good as the Osram Nightbreakers IMO. Light 10/10.

The Ring +120s add an extra 10-15m which I thought would be a little more when compared to the OEM bulb distance but up to the drop-off point they are solid white light with out any fade. The same goes right across the beams pattern to the edges. Very impressive. The night breakers seemed to go a little further still. (Don't get me wrong the Ring bulbs go a LONG way overall, its just the night breakers are known to go really far.) Its literally only the extra 5m the Osrams go, but the quality of light to that point is NOT as good as the Rings. It is more my expectations I guess that they would have gone really REALLY far.
Distance 9/10.

The beam scatter is WAY better than the OEMs that were fitted. With solid light right o the edges with minimal drop off and they go nice and high on the left side, illuminating sings very well and providing a great visual reference of where the edge of the road is. They light up the lower part of the road and verge like fogs do! Pattern 10/10

Safety 10/10.
Styling 10/10 (for regular type bulbs)

Overall I would score these a 9.5/10. I can't comment on longevity as they have only been in a few days. Would I recommend these and buy again instead of Osram Nightbreakers and Phillips Extreme Vision...yes I would as overall they are better.

All that performance for £15...half the price of the Phillips and Osrams on average.

Here are some pics to see of external shots. Ill get an internal shot tomorrow and post up. When I fit the LED DRLs are do a mini review like above also.

Hi seen these on ebay, and look good quality ,would these work for the DRL lights , http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W21-5W-74...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20db24410a

No they are not suitable. They are not 'error free' so will likely throw up an error message due to the lack of on board resistors which stop this from happening on modern vehicles.

You can buy and fit the resistors separately though, some bulbs don't need them, you would be better getting some of these.

The fitting doesn't look correct either, as the DRL bulbs in a 500L are not the wedge type but rather the standard fitment.

Thanks for that, I was sure they were std./bayonet fitment as that is what the manual says they are, though this is not the first time the manual has been shown to contain an error.

Don't forget the resistor issue though or you may get an error/bulb failure warning.

ed - and by way of some weird co-incidence the DRL filament in my drivers side bulb blew today and I had to buy one, mine are the wedge push in type too so it looks like the manual is completely wrong.

Further ed. - this place has the Canbus friendly - error free type. I presume £24.95 is for a pair!
