Re: Wheel Help Please

Latest Update:

Skipped sales and now directly interacting with Parts.

First off let me say, these guys have a LOT more class and integrity than the sales slime...

Down to business:
Fiat hasn't even begun to manufacture the spare donuts NOR the kits to hold the spare.

An OEM Alloy rim is $1350
Not a typo... Over a grand and thats the cheapest one.

I also own a Mini Cooper Countryman and I purchased the exact same alloy rims with sensors, add tire and less than half this. Fiat is way out of line.

So the parts guy, after stating that I definitely would not be the last customer to ask for a spare are working to find me a REASONABLE solution.

Again, Parts and also the service manager are trying to help.

The sales guys, I will be posting that info on another thread such that nobody else gets burned by their lack of integrity and con artist hand shakes.

So WARNING! If you want a spare for the new Fiat 500L that you WERE considering (maybe not any more) just know, it will cost you a TON just to find anything that will fit your car.

At least I got the scum sales out of the middle and can now work with the parts guy to hopefully find a solution...

Re: Wheel Help Please

Ok, after the nat reps have come and gone, there are NO spare tires available for this car anywhere in the US of A!

The service manager has been doing everything in his power to find something that will work but nope, none.

I have asked for a spare, an OEM rim that is already on the car, I will handle the tire and sensors, they asked if a steel rim would be ok?
YES YES YEEEEEES!!!!! BUT of course, they don't have them either.

The nat rep, supposedly a VP...if that matters, not to me, anyhow, tried to pin her down on a date/time and nope, no ETA for anything.

I almost traded my mini in for another 500L cause I really like the car.
GOOD THING I DIDN'T!!!!!!!!!

WARNING! If you want a spare for the new Fiat 500L that you WERE considering (maybe not any more) just know, THEY DON'T HAVE THEM AND CAN'T GET THEM NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU ASK! DON'T EXIST!

Re: Wheel Help Please

When the Japanese, and later the Koreans, began selling cars in Britain they set up spare parts infrastructure before the cars went on sale. The rest is history.

I really can't understand this at all, and I wonder if it is the same here.

Re: Wheel Help Please

the selling of Italian motorcycles over in the US has been a 15 year disaster - to the point where sales REALLY slumped , and the parent company has now essentially folded,
lessons to be learned..,

Re: Wheel Help Please

Trekking L !

Are these the 225/45R17 on the 7x`Y’spokes?
If it’s only an emergency spare – then surely a standard FIAT steel with e.g. a 195/65R15 tyre … tire will do the job?
The 225/45R17 rotates at 808 revs/mile & a 195/65R15 at 807.
There’s a batch of 20+ (P/No. STL61659U45?) going on eBay.com described as “refinished” (?)

Re: Wheel Help Please

Ok, just placed my order...

Tire Rack didn't seem to have them weeks ago but they do now.

http://www.tirerack.com

Don't just place the order on line, call them.
There are differences... Even though they are 17s for rims, there was a difference and they JUST got the right ones in... Like JUST NOW kind a thing.

The bolt patterns, two types available, one correct for us AND they send you lugs that fit these rims perfectly so they seat right when you use them.

Also a center cap.... No charge for lugs and cap.

I went with 225/45ZR-17 Continental ExtremeContact DWS
cause I will be putting these all the way around once the original tires are worn. I think ahead...thats just me.
He had way less $$$$$ options.

I went with this rim, its a spare...
17x7.5 O.Z. X5B MGDC

Also having them mount and spin balance.

Total including shipping is $318.12

That's less than Fiats spare kit and I wouldn't have to stop and get it fixed until I got home...

I'll have it in a few days, mounted and ready to roll.

LOVE Tire Rack!

Hope this is useful to somebody...

Re: Wheel Help Please

The main difference is the kit hangs the tire under the car and doesn't take up room in the boot. But your way will save weight and fuel when out of the car during daily commute. I think I still am leaning toward the factory model.

I thought hard about this. Daily commute, I wouldn't want to have to change a tire in our rush hour, I'd just ride the flat bed with the car back to my house. Change it there, thus the full spare would still be good til I got the other tire fixed.

On a trip, I want whats on the car, on the car. Yes, I drive fast on trips and a donut won't cut it, plus down time to get the full size fixed, just makes more sense to go full for me.

AND then there's the wait for the factory. Everybody who has already purchased a car and paid for the factory and have been waiting for it to show up, get theirs first. That won't include me. So I've opted to skip this completely.

On another note, NOW that I have a spare on the way, will be here Mon, I may consider trading the mini for another 500L if Fiat does a fair deal. Thus far they didn't but there are three dealerships within an hour of here.
Biggest factor was that I didn't want to have TWO 500Ls and no spare...
That has now been resolved.

Re: Wheel Help Please

FINAL UPDATE:

Just unpacked the wheel from tire rack.

It fits very nicely in the boot on its side.

The shelf that comes with the car won't fit in its slot but does sit fine on top of the tire. These are 45s, wide tires.

I will ride around with it for a few days back and forth to work but don't anticipate any problems.
For long trips, I feel way better.

Tire rack includes the centering rig, lugs and mounting and balancing at no extra cost.

This mission is completed...

Fiat still has no inventory for full size rims. God help anybody who breaks one.

And last I read, the plant where they make these cars can't move product. Some kind of strike? Not the plant but the transportation people? Blocking roads and railways? Wow, like Fiat needed that right about now? Ouch!

PS: Weight of the rim is 23lbs.
Shipping weight was 49lbs.
Thanks MJG thanked for this post
