Hi all,

I have a question that has been confusing me. I hear a bit about the sunroof affecting the head height in the rear seats. This is a big issue for me as part of the reason I like the car is that it has a bit more space in the back (than my current Golf). I have been in a 500L without the sunroof and one with the fixed glass roof. I was only in them briefly but I didn't really notice the difference in the head height. Certainly not as bad as people have been saying (I am 6'3"). If anything, head height might actually be better with the fixed glass roof. As I say, I was only in there for a short time.

The reviews I have read that have noted this issue seem all to be testing the openable electric sunroof, which looks to me to take up much more roof space than the fixed version.

Does anyone have a definitive answer on this?

I quite like the fixed glass roof and I would be tempted to go for it, but not at the cost of rear head height.

Cheers,

Well I sat in the back of one with a fixed glass roof and my head was actually pressing on the padded surround to the glass, and I am only 6'00". It was the first negative thing I noticed about the car. Fortunately the one without the glass roof has plenty of head height, and I don't like glass roofs ;).

But you need to go back to the dealer and take a good look yourself. You can adjust and recline the rear seat to give adequate headroom, but it doesn't make for an ideal seating position.

I haven't seen one with an opening glass roof.

Hi Ulpian,

Thanks for the comment. Maybe I was slouching a bit. I will try and go back.

It's a shame as I quite like the fixed glass roof. I am not fond of some sunroofs, but I like that one. Saves a bit of money anyway.

We are all a different shape of course, but in this case I really was pressing against the roof.

I hate low roofs for many reasons, not least because I had my neck broken when the car I was upside down in as we were sliding along on the roof, having spun and rolled a lot, from 100mph, hit a rock and pushed the roof up onto my head - I was wearing a seatbelt otherwise I'd be dead. That was in '83 and I spent fifteen weeks in hospital, and I've never had a conventional low roofed car since ;)

I was the passenger by the way.

I want a handspan over my head in a car if at all possible.

Gosh that's quite a reason for being concerned about head height! I was just worried that my kids seem to grow too fast.

This was one of the first things I checked when test driving the 500L yesterday.

I too had seen review comments on you tube about rear head room issues with the sun roof, including the fixed glass.

I am 5' 10' and with a fixed roof it was not a problem for me, but the roof was close' anybody much taller would I reckon have an issue, the frame is just in the 'wrong' place.

Sliding the rear seats (which they do) may help.

In the end we went without a roof glass version or option so it's a none issue for us but I would strongly urge anybody considering a 500L who will carry tall rear passengers on a regular basis to physically check this out at a dealers to see if they think it will be an issue for them or not.
