Hi guys, I apologise for my first post being a cry for help but here goes,

I was driving to work yesterday and my 500 twin air suddenly started only giving about 80% power, the turbo won’t kick in when I take it out of eco mode, and when the engine is under load there is a strange whirring noise which sounds to me like something is trying to work but can’t quite do whatever it’s trying.
It doesn’t sound like a belt to me but I haven’t ruled it out, I’ve taken the top cover and air filter off the top of the engine and all the pipes look ok at a glance and a gentle tug.

Hoping someone can shed some light, thanks, Graham.

Hi, any blue/grey exhaust smoke? Even in eco mode the turbo will be working - and it does sound like your turbo has bit the dust. Time to visit a mechanic. Sorry

I shall have a look next time I get the chance, I haven’t noticed anything while driving.

Assuming it is the turbo will it still be safe to drive?

Another thought - check there isn’t something sucked into the air intake partially blocking it. I’ve also (not on a fiat, on an mg) had the intake pipe come lose on its mounting and suck itself again the bodywork inside the engine bay restricting the airflow.

I’ve checked the intake up to the air filter and that all looks clear and the intake was securely mounted.

Hi :)
There have been a few reports of a failed plastic fitting on the intercooler hose..

That will kill any boost.. but without a guaranteed engine light..

Charlie

Thanks for the suggestion, I shall check the inter cooler hose connections as well.

The intercooler connections seemed good so I have started taking the turbo off, that doesn’t look in good shape does it.

Is that the oil feed pipe just under the plate with the writing & qr code - if so it looks to have a lot of burnt oil crud in it. Could be the pipes are partially blocked with burnt oil causing oil starvation? If you change your turbo best check and perhaps change the oil pipes too.

Great advice, thank you, I’ve stripped the turbo and oil starvation was the conclusion I came to as well, I didn’t consider checking the pipe work though.

Unfortunately, so many other things have gone wrong with the car, I decided to cut my losses and get a 2014 500 s twin air.
