Good evening all. Just after some help/advice about a starting issue (more like it doesn’t). Try to start the car and there’s nothing but a few clicking noises, no starter kicks in or anything. Got the multimeter on the battery and with ignition off it's reading 12.8 volts. Go to jump it from our other car and it starts straight away. Turn off the car and disconnect the jump leads and it fails to turn over/start, battery still reads 12.8 volts. Baffled, any of you good folks out there any idea?

Not a failing battery to motor Earth Cable ?
Thanks for your reply. I too was thinking of battery possibly starting to fail (but it seems to be holding it’s charge but why can’t it turn the engine over but jumping it can) and my next step in daylight tomorrow is to check earth bonding

Not the battery..!

It has good power.. but you cannot get its
Power to the starter

Put a jumper lead from battery negative to engine metalwork ( you have achieved similar while jump starting) ;)
Ah yes of course, doh, why didn’t think of that. I’ll give it a go in the morning. Thanks again

How did you connect the jump pack, both leads on battery or positive and body or engine ? If both were on the battery it's goosed, how old is it
For jumping positive on donor car to positive on the 500 then negative on donor car to ground point in the 500’s engine bay. Starts first time like this.
Today have tried just a jump lead from the negative terminal on the 500 to the ground point in the engine bay (same one i used for jump starting). This has no affect on it at all, still doesn’t start.
To add to my woes I’ve got the steering wheel symbol lit up on the dash (after a jump start that is) so now I’ve got power steering failure.
Even more baffled now. Was going to try and check the earth straps as another thing today but rain stopped play for now.
Not sure how old the battery is though, I’ve had the car two years now and has never been changed by me (I’ll check it to see if there any indication of age)
Anyone got any further suggestions?

New battery, trust me, try www.batterymegastore.co.uk

Everything you're saying says its duff, to check turn on ignition headlights on full beam now read voltage after 1 min

Steering wheel symbol indicates lack of voltage, its not bust.

Is your car a stop start one, make sure its a SS battery if it is, IE. expensive ish

Think this is the right one but check, there's EFB and AGM types; https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/varta-efb-blue-dynamic-d53-car-battery/
Appreciate the advice, thanks. No mine isn’t the stop start version. I’ll give the battery a voltage reading as you mentioned when it eventually stops raining here. Would that be a voltage reading with or without engine running?

Without it shows how the battery can maintain a load 20a isnt much but im sure it will drop off quickly. will look up the right battery ours failed after starting within a mile, stopped at shops then totally knackered.

no ss think its this one, measure your tray not battery https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/varta-silver-dynamic-c30-car-battery/
put in your reg and pick might not be the same as ours check the post layout too and cold cranking amps

I had similar symptoms with the battery failing . It read about 12.8 with ignition on but as soon as a big load put on, it dropped off the edge. It was 3 years old but fortunately 4 year guarantee so was changed FOC by Tayna Batteries in North wales. https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/

8 years old it's a good guess it's the second battery your suggestion is worth a try, just to confirm it's knackered?
As soon as this rain stops I’ll carry on my investigation over the next few days so will keep you all updated as to my progress. I have a feeling this battery is quite old but it’s a good call to try an borrow battery (might be difficult). On the other advice of testing with a booster cable do excuse my ignorance how would that be done?

Like jump starting..

But just the BLACK cable ;)

Clip to battery negative and engine metalwork

If no better clip to battery neg. And chassis
I've tried this further up this thread. Negative on battery to the same area in the engine bay i used for jump starting but nothing, still doesn't turn over

Managed to take a reading off the battery this morning before I left for work (with engine not running). 12.6 Volts. Turned on ignition (engine not started) and lights to full beam, left it for a minute and the voltage dropped to 6.2 volts.
Still unable to start other than through a jump start.

Definitely got a knackered battery by those reading's
