Smile Re: 1.2 Lounge Incoming

The dealer confirmed today that it does indeed have the electric tilt/slide sunroof. Result. That wasn't on the listing & my wife is very very happy.

I'm pretty confident that it will also have DAB. Seriously hope so.

And hopefully it will also have Uconnect Live although, having read a few threads, my car may have missed the cut. Someone said U Live was from Sep 2015 on and my build date is 28 August 2015.....

More to the point I still don't know when I'll be able to get my hands on it. The garage has done the service, valet & paint correction. The transport is booked. And that's all that I/they know.

Worst case scanario is 10 days from order confirmation to pick which would mean next Tuesday. By some miracle it could pop up in Milton Keynes over the weekend but I doubt it.

I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Re: 1.2 Lounge Incoming

The good news is that it's been seviced, cleaned and machine polished.

The bad news is that it's still in Huddersfield. Sigh :-(

I really really hope thet get their act together and managed to get it down here during the week so I can pick it up at the weekend.

Right; I can't wait any longer.

I've booked a day off tomorrow and I'm on the 9.30 out of Kings X.

Then a 186 mile return leg. Should give me time to get used to it :-)

Thanks, will do. It'll be interesting to see how it does on the motorway and also what it'll do economy-wise.

The car it's replacing was a 20 year old Clio which showed 24mpg on the OBC. My mate's 500 shows double that and that's also a London car.

You can see why the Clio wasn't ULEZ exempt......

Had a great drive home yesterday. I spent a bit of time at the dealer working out the infotainment then set off from Hudderfield for the 20 mile or so cross country run to the M1 (J37?).

First impreseeions were great. I had Talksport crystal clear on DAB plus directions from the (very good) built-in Tom Tom. I was also getting loads of what I now know to be speed camera warnings but was still getting to grips with the car and hope I didn't get nicked in one of the villages (I was staring at the instruments trying to work out why the car was beeping at me, not looking out for the forwarding-facing Yorkshire cameras....).

The lack of power was only noticeable of one or two of the steeper back roads and the hilariously slow way it tackled the slip road onto the motorway but after that it was just fine. It'll cruise all day long at motorway speeds. More to the point I found it incredibly comfortable and planted - I was expecting it to be bouncing around all over the place - quite the opposite.

I did another 20 miles or so then pulled over for something to eat just south of Sheffield. Read the manual a bit more to see if I'd missed anything then resumed the rest of the three hour drive home.

Got out fresh as you like, showed it to my delighted wife who immediately jumped in and drove us to Queen's Park where one of her best mates lives. I was turfed out and they went off for a spin. 10 minutes later various mums and daughter were cooing over it metallic teal blue paint and funky brown leather. It was a massive hit - LOL.

Much to my surprise, though, I really really enjoyed driving it. After reading all the road tests I was really expecting it to be far more compromised than it actually is. It's a great little package with a fantastic interior and some really cool tech. It's a great city car, it's the cheapest car I've ever insured and taxed and it's by far the most economical. AND, surprise, it can do big distances with ease.

It's a hit!

Re: 1.2 Lounge Incoming

10 days in and the little 500 has taken to city life like a duck to water. I love bombing around in it. One thing I wasn't expecting was how good the heating & ventilation is - I can get it demisted in seconds which is super-handy for the early morning run to the tube station.

I love the interior. The 5 inch screen is eaey to operate, packed full of stuff (DAB & live TomTom being my favourites) and the saddle brown leather makes it a bit special.

And I've discovered how miniscule the turning circle. That, the short wheelbase and the lack of overhangs make three point turns an absolute doddle.

Criticisms? There's nothing below 1.5k rpm but that's OK - from 2-3k there's plenty to rown it along. And there's not much suspension travel at the front so speedbumps need a bit of consideration. But those are minor things.

My poor Merc has been able to put its feet up this week and I'm sure it's very happy to have a younger, more agile stablemate to do all the local running around. I only took it out once this week and that was yesterday. I had to go to timberyard in Edgeware to pick up some OSB for a shed store I'm building. This is the sort of thing an E Class estate is build for and is brilliant at. Next it'll be a load of 6 x 3 diamond trellising. Again, that car is perfect for that sort of thing.

But right now I'm off to the bakers in the 500 to pick up some breakfast.

I love it!

Thanks! Took a gamble in reserving it without seeing in in the flesh but, thankfully, the (saddle brown?) leather works really with the blue & cream.

Very unusual, too. Apart from one of the facelift press launch cars which had similar seats with mind green painttwork, I've only ever seen 500's with black or, once or twice, red leather.

Thanks. I'll be careful with those seats!

Re the demisting & aircon - much better that my E Class Merc. To be fair the Merc is an estate so there's a lot of air to shift inside. But it's just another reason to grab the keys to the 500.

I love the sunroof even in closed mode. It's such a large area of glass and it brightens the interior on the dullest of days. The fact that this one opens was a massive bonus as it wasn't listed on the ad.

Having a glass sunroof was mandatory as I don't have one one the other car and I really miss one - I've had one on every I've had car since 1990.

That meant the searching process kept coming back to MINI's and 500's. Tried MINI's and found them big on the outside and cramped on the inside - ie the total oppossite of 500's - with horrendous ride quality. Also, I asked a couple of people on the trade and they told me to run a mile from them.

Hence the 500. Charming and brilliant at what it does. I've just been to pick up the Sunday paper in it. Every journey makes me smile.

Yes, nicely specced car. I looked at them and the By Diesels too for the same reason.

One mod I really want to do is the under seat sub. I don't have the time or skills to fit one but am on the lookout for somene who can. It's a shame that all the small installers have gone to the wall in recent years. Maybe I'll be able to fiind a mobile fitter who could do it on my drive.

Did you say the one you fitted was OEM? The popular alternatives seems to be Pioneer or Panasonic.

Re: 1.2 Lounge Incoming

That's a lovely little car!

Even if you do nothing else to the sound system fit a subbie - makes a world of difference. Mine's a Pioneer and isn't exactly a powerful model but is more than adequate for the 500. Make sure your installer comes highly recommended though. When they did mine they popped a pre-tensioner and it took six weeks to get a replacement from Italy to Australia, during which I couldn't drive my four day old car!

I wouldn't consider a car that didn't have at least a sunroof these days. I was looking at a 500 Sport but the totally black interior with no sunroof was oppressive and changed my mind.
