Hi everyone,

Please be soft on me I’m defo no mechanic ?
I’ve got a 2013 fiat 500 lounge. The car won’t start, my passenger side mirror isn’t adjusting with the controls, I’ve even had it replaced still nothing. My car battery is only a year old and I think my epc/epu unit was replaced (not sure the correct term), blue and me isn’t working either, the external temp doesn’t work so it just says ‘——-’
Stop start doesn’t work and the mileage is flashing in my car... do I have to throw my car in the bin lol?

Don't panic.

Has your car been unused for a long time due to cv19?

Or short journeys?

It is likely battery is very flat and needs correct charging.

Even a new battery does not last long on an used vehicle.

Please post a photo of your battery.

Thanks
Jack

Hi

Did the stopstart work when new battery was fitted?

The system is 'clever' if it senses the battery is low in power it wont let the motor do 'stop:start' cycles

The mirror and temp reading are probably poor connections.. or a cheap mirror with less wires .. Ive had that

It doesnt sound like its not fixable..
They are nice cars..and still worth a reasonable amount :)

Where are you based.. there are some good garages around who can do a great job

(Some of this you can do yourself ;) )

Hi,

First thing I would ask is did you fit a proper Start/Stop battery. Like you I know 'nuffing' and rely on others to be experienced and honest.

I did not even know SStart batteries were different until I screwed mine up after letting it go flat. I then charged with a standard charger and jumped the car and battery just bowed out at the sides and expired.

Then I had no BlueMe, cluster warning lights ON, flashing miles, windows USB would not work and 68R dash pod got no supply etc etc.

Fitted new correct battery but still same electrical issues something to do with module alignment but left battery off overnight then reconnected after 24 hours and everything was fine.

The stop start is very sensitive though and says 'not available' after car stands for a week but after the first 10 minutes of driving it then works fine.

Now I am fortunate as I work with a techy/lecky/geek who sorted out all this but would hate to think what a garage would charge. Indeed the Fiat local main dealer said initially what we were trying to do change the satnav from magnetiMarelliMAP to a TOMTOM2 was not even possible. Well whilst we did allow the battery to go flat while the car stood and the reprogramming being done meant ignition was on a lot without engine running so our fault really but we did get everything working prefectly in the end.

So while I don't think the car is finished it needs electrical expertise and sadly that is not cheap at a dealer.

We love our classic cars with no electronics but the daughter insisted she wanted a Fiat 500. Our RangeRover which is loaded with a lot of electronics we do not even use thankfully is company issue so not our worry.

Do you have the old mirror? There's probably nothing wrong with it, I suspect the "wrong" version as used to replace it(without a temp sensor in it as it's in the passenger side ome)
Blu and me is a prime candidate for causing a flat battery, was it working correctly before?
The flashing mileage is likely a battery voltage issue though simply replacing it might not fix it but it's not too hard to sort out.
Which ECU was replaced? And why ?
It's possible your mirror control panel is faulty does the drivers work?

The basic 500 is pretty robust..
If it runs well then the
stop:start and the temp.sensor in the mirrors should be pretty simple :)

B+M though is a can of worms

It might be:
Never fitted
Not updated
Broken
Off.line

Thats why I didnt mention it ;)

Gurl ....I started figuring all my 500 issues out last summer with the kind help of all the peeps on here!! I started at 0!!! Now I can work MES software to diagnose & potentially fix most issues

I guess your either interested in DIY or your not but please don’t go to a main dealer!!

They fleece you & just give you negative nonsense! (From my experience)

Try a local garage if you can’t diy ..but to be honest your issues sound fixable

Well said baglady...totally agree.

I am happy to buy all the MES equipment and make it available for the North Lincolnshire area as we do not seem covered on the list of areas that have it available for help.

Trouble is I just don't know what to buy and a few weeks ago someone did send me a link that just offered various things and makes and it really did not help me work out what was needed so I don't buy the wrong things, not enough or too much.

If someone could just list me the things to buy that will be needed as no experience in this area at all. I am sure my work partner 'hacky' will get his head around using it but I cannot expect him to research what to buy.

I am not lazy and happy to do researching but it was too confusing for me as inexperienced with various makes and whether contracts are required.

Given though my main dealer could not even sort out our satnav update and gave me totally wrong information on how the factory software worked with the car I certainly will not be rushing in to them with any problems.

The 2 things likely to make any panda..or 500 'unfixable'
Are still fixable.. just very expensive

Rear suspension beam collapse -10+ years old

Semi.auto gearbox failure - duologic..selespeed
Probably the most complex..and costly part of the car (specialist kit required too)

Im with you on MES
its not super complex.. but mine is OLD now @2012).. so most help requests wouldnt work

Its reasonably straightforward to use though :)

I helped a fella who tired of paying local FIAT £95 each time his mileage flashed..

He saw it took a leisurely 15 minutes..
Me talking him through it..

So he bought his own :)

and advise what to do on the laptop as ive completely forgotten what I had to do!

once you have the kit we can help out as to using it! once you get used to using it....you wont forget as its surprisingly easy!

Hi,

I don't want to distract from the OP here so sorry but if OK:worship:..... to download onto a laptop??? but if loaned out does the laptop go with it as that makes a difference which I would use. I do have a couple of unused windows netbooks. Do I not need something though looks like a handheld voltmeter or is it just some special leads and a laptop.

Maybe someone who has the time can put a post titled 'equiping yourself with the necessary MES scan equipment' (ie ..MESMultiscan for DUMMIES) and list exactly what to buy.......piece by piece for this dummy............

Any windows laptop the can run Windows 7 would be fine

It only needed a USB port to connect the cables to :)

You can leave the program on that laptop as long as you get the laptop back!

As far as the leads just have a look on eBay for MES leads ....most prefer authorised leads
Somewhere on that multiecuscan site it has a list of stockists the ones on eBay can be cheap Chinese ones that are unreliable!

Actually it works on anything from XP onwards.

Lots of cheap, cheap suitable secondhand laptops now that Win7 and earlier are out of support. Heck, if you put the word out, someone might even give you one for free.

Hi, not short of laptops or computers either here in the home.... we still even have our old orignal Amstrad computer and one that still works with Win95 as our Dymo label printer software could not be updated. Several Dell Inspiron netbooks too with Win7 and Win 10 still laying around in cupboards too.

So my understanding so far is all that is needed is the correct cables and a software license payment. No other additional hand held devices then that several came up pictured in the previous link I was given that confused us.

Quote here details your requirements :

Pre 2016 for ENGINE You shouldnt need the coloured adaptor... but buying the coloured cables bundle for @£15 is worthwhile..
As it means you can Do ABS. pas. Etc

( they plug onto the main OBD lead..like extensions..);)

Look at gendan.co.uk their site is clear and easy to understand. The people there are also friendly and very very helpful. I bought the whole kit from them with software cables adapters etc. For most things a single wire from car to computer is all that's needed. Car has different computer modules for brakes and steering which require an adapter that sticks on the wire before plugging into the car. If you can play solitaire on the computer you should be able to get is working as the menus are clear and easy. It cost me £126 but a few years ago now. I have had my money's worth many times over. The is a gendan user forum too which can be helpful.
