I didn't see the USA part, but I had a feeling that it was a 1959 anyways.

Of the gear is fully engaged, the stick moves the same distance forward for first and 3rd but it still pops out and it's not the linkage, it's the gear box, there will be plenty available second-hand the issue is not common so a good buy used, new clutch at the same time.
