Technical 500 stop/start

Technical 500 stop/start

I like it when it doesn’t work but my convertible had the triangle and stop start light on. Comes up after a few seconds of start up.

MES told me it was the brake switch. Changed it and hey presto. All working again.

I saw that on your video today [emoji106] then went and found mine! Learned something again today [emoji3]

Would buying a better battery solve my SS issues or would that do the same as this Halfords one
I do use my car every day but just short journeys

By 'better' I assume you mean a higher capacity battery. Not really a good answer.
If each short journey puts less into the battery than starting took out, it will gently flatten. A higher capacity battery will just take longer.
If the short journey gets the battery back to full charge near the end of the journey, it will not matter what battery you fit. The monitoring system will measure the status, and still not allow it to stop until battery capacity will allow.
If the higher capacity battery allows stop/start to work earlier in the short journey, each restart will deplete the battery a little more. If currently the battery reaches full charge near the end of the short journey, allowing the engine to stop and restart even once may leave it slightly discharged. Over time this will gently discharge the battery, until stop/start disables again. So the higher capacity battery might actually make things worse.

Thank you! I will just have to get out in the car more often [emoji23] I love SS but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t work all the time! It just bugged me and wanted to get to the bottom of it!
Thanks again!

So, you have got an intelligent battery charger? I have just used mine and it took 2 days to get a new Bosch S4 upto 100% fully charged.
Note 12.7 volts is fully charged and 12.2 volts is 60% charged anything below 12v is virtually dead!

Stop-start systems certainly don't like lockdown! At its strictest, we were using each car once a week, my Hyundai for shopping and my wife's 500 for dropping provisions to her dad. Ironically, the 5 year old Fiat's s/s kept working, the 2 year old Hyundai's didn't. Back to working now as we are allowed out more.

Hello lady,

if 12.1 volts was reading from battery charger when you put it on charge then battery was very close to totally flat.

Good work getting charger :)

Still having issues with my SS [emoji23] it’s so flaky just tested my battery it’s reading 12.7 on the little chart that came with tester that is supposed to be high... in your experience is that correct?

Also I was periodically checking my car with MES I noticed this thing called neutral signal learn so I tried it as it suggests for optimal functioning of the SS but it won’t execute I’ve no errors either so I’m a little confused IMG_4443.JPGView attachment 1

Hello,

Testing condition of battery using voltage reading is notoriously unreliable , even if the pre voltage read conditions are followed(I won't get into those conditions here)

You could take your car to a halfords shop and ask them for a free battery check. Halfords near me use a yuasa battery tester that new costs around £1600 . Even then it is not gaurenteed to be a100% reliable test.

How old is your battery.

Charlie varescary has extensive first hand experience of stop start batteries. If he replied listen to him :)

Best wishes

Jack

It’s under a year old I’ll try Halfords for a battery check when I was charging battery up SS was working perfectly but I can’t be charging the battery every 3 days

Obviously I’m not doing enough miles but when I tested battery earlier it was giving me good readings I didn’t realise it wasn’t reliable
