Hi peeps, we're going to replacing the back box, silencer, muffler or whatever you call it (There's so many names for it)

Anyways our local car parts shop has closed and now not sure which one to get. Ours has corroded (Outer case) which is common I been told.

It's a 2009 500 Lounge 1.4 with a Sports button any ideas which one and where from would be appreciated. Don't want no big bore or nothing crazy just a like for like replacement.

Thanks everyone for your kindness.

Is that the flat oval looking one which ours, its not the one that looks like a pea shooter lol [emoji106] appreciate your help buddy.
I got a 1.2 pop one on eBay for £25. Have a look, they’ll be cheaper

Thanks for the heads up John I will check it out, is this a common problem with these 500s.
Replace the whole thing the front section is likely in a similar state, and the gearbox to exhaust bracket is probably rusted away, think the 1.4 is a different size Bore and length

Cheers mate, the reason I'm so confused is our car parts shop before it closed down said there was 2 a normal one for 45 quid and a sport on for 70 quid. It has sports mode so dose that make any difference [emoji848] I know if you press it it goes like the clappers lol [emoji1787] pressed it for the first time the other day and nearly took off [emoji851] quickly turned it back off. I seen this one on eBay.
The pea shooter but the oval lounge chrome ended one was only about £10 more.

As its the 1.4, its most likely different. The oval one on the 1.2 looks exactly the same but I've never had a 1.2 so I'm not sure. There are others on here with 1.4s I'm sure who will be able to advise.

Maybe the diameter of the main pipe is different, i.e. a wider bore. Not sure, sorry.

Hi Craig,

Keep us informed what you find and fit as I have exact same problem on our daughter's car and not yet sorted it. The outer skin on the backbox has totally disintegrated but the inner skin still looks OK just was picked up as advisory on the last Mot.

It is confusing exactly what is specifically different to the 500 1.4S as I sourced a manuafcturer who does a 1.2S in stainless but was told they were not the same and no one appears to do a stainless system for the 1.4S unless bespoke made to measure manufacturer.

I did find the one complete mild steel system as linked on ebay from Dudley (Duddley) west midlands and actually put an offer in £10 less and they came back at £1 less so I put £5 less and they just rejected......seemed pointless listing as buy now or make offer:bang:

That said I tried to find anyone who has purchased one for the Fiat 500 in the sellers feedback but got a bit put off with complaints on fit and finish so thought I would keep searching. Not that the 'finish' matters but the fit quality I am sure is important. That said for a complete system after cat it does seem a good price.

Hi Craig,

Well I put ''Fiat 500 exhaust'' into their search box and it just froze. I can't believe a car of this volume is not better supported with a generic spare part such as an exhaust not just on this site but the whole of the internet.

There wasn't many 1.4 engined cars sold it was only an option for about 2-3 years until it was replaced by the twinair
Probably the reason it's hard to find aftermarket parts

I'll give em a call tomorrow and let you know [emoji106]

I put " Fiat 500 1.4 exhaust " in Ebay and there's lots of choice

Yes John there appears pages and pages to troll through but most (not ALL) but most are 1.2 despite being specific asking for 1.4.

I have asked several manufacturers showing 1.2's as I initially wanted an SS system and they do not make the 1.4's even in MS or others have just not replied. Still don't even know what the specific difference is.

Sort of left it at the moment as still strong inner skin on the backbox with no rust. Just when I saw Craig's post thought I would find out what he too comes up with.

Think central silencer is one difference?

Yes when looking at the whole system overall the 1.2 is just a single pipe whereas the 1.4 has an additional middlebox.

That said it is not clear if the point where the rear box joins either is the same point and the whole backbox is the same. I suspect it is not as no one is listing the backbox as a common item.

Also on checking some of the eBay listed showing 1.4 litre 500 cars they then in the detail say it is for a 500L model and not a 500S so really seemed a minefield as not an item cheap to return if wrong.

Finally I found this site https://www.autodoc.co.uk/asmet/7979369 which indeed list several well known manufacturers like Walker, Eberspacher and clearly shows in the detail and description they are for the 1.4 500S and even had their own search specific on registration number.

I like the one by ASMET, never heard of them but came with tail pipe fitting or without if required, but I want the tail pipe finisher.

One make that is listed shows some clamps and hangers but it is hard to tell if included in the price. The web page is very slow but that maybe because so many at home at the moment watching NETFLIX, and also it keeps asking to accept cookies and despite saying yes the next page continually asks again.

Prices all seemed decent in the lower end but I did like the look of the Eberspacher model but as it is not seen I don't suppose it makes a lot of difference really.

Maybe Craig will have a look too into this site and compare against what else has been found. main thing is finally at least a supplier that is showing choices and descriptions and even reviews from other buyers.

Maybe also someone else has dealt with this company.

Hi Craig,

Thought it maybe worthwhile linking this post https://www.fiatforum.com/500/481001-1-4s-exhaust-system-sleigh-arrives-germany.html

I think it is a fair warning if the back box outer skin has rotted through likely the middle section won't be far away.

Given the difficulties we had separating the back box joint and the small cost of the whole system with ALL fittings over just a backbox I would do the full after cat changeover. I doubt very much anyway you could change just the back box without removing/releasing the centre section off its hangers and possibly even having to part the front flange at the catalyst. Also put some protection around the old tailpipe as it tends to rub up against the paint on the back bumper while wiggling around to get off the rear hangers

If you need some of the larger flange pinch nuts I can post a couple out.
