Hi All

New to the forum. I've had a look through but can't find anything to help, so here we go.

Bought my Daughter a 2009 500 sport, 1.2 petrol. Thought I would service it myself to save a few pennies. Managed to get a 12mm allen key for the sump plug.

Was an absolute bugger to remove, Jeff Capes must have put it in.

I had a new one in a service kit I bought from ebay. When I fitted it I was expecting it to lock up flush with the sump but it just kept on going. I gave it a couple of more turns but still no good. I didn't want to go any further and lose the bloody thing in the sump.

Any ideas?

Should it come to a stop? I've read that the plug should be tapered but I am pretty sure it was a parallel thread.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi :)

Yes tapered thread in the steel sump pan

So either :

Original thread is fine..just wound hard into the taper.. you could reuse it

Or..

Thread is butchered..and they bonded it shut.. (hence the effort )

Put the old and new plugs alongside each other.. for comparison

Then let us know what youve seen

Tapered plugs have been used for years, used to be very common until the late sixties, I think Fiat may be the only ones still using them.

Despite this, most people seem to wind them in very tightly, making removal difficult.

It is likely that the 'new' plug is not tapered, so have a good look. If the old one is usable then do so, if not, genuine new ones used to be very cheap.

My advice when tightening the sump plug, hold the spanner/ratchet right up the handle beside the nut so you cannot apply much force, note the condition of the sump pan, its probably had a new one in the past, worst case "simply" replace the sump pan?

Hi All

Thanks for the replies. Really helpful.

I removed the new plug and fitted the old one. Old one defo taper thread and tightened up easily.
New plug was parallel. Will keep an eye on that next time. One more turn and it would have been in the sump!

Thanks again

Probably in correct part that's been used by a previous owner cheep aftermarket one or something

What was the sump like? My daughter's Fiat 500 (2009) had sump replaced last year. My other daughter's Fiat Punto (2012), we had it replaced before buying last year. Worth checking out. Normally corroded, so easy to see wet patches given the weather has been exceptionally dry lately.
