Door hinges I'd just cover with grease

Top mounts are also common rust area's
Remove what rust you can with some wire wool Fill area with some grease and buy some covers to go on top of them

I bought those genuine covers but they are crap and still let water in.

I then found someone selling 3d printed ones which are far better - over 6 months with these fitted and no water leaking in whatsoever;

I use some similar mine are stuck down with some silicone too for extra assurance!
Those top hats are crappy mine let water in too!!

I know right!

I bought 2 x new top mounts and put those OE hats on...2 weeks later they had already rusted!

If i hadn't found those 3d printed ones i honestly think some sandwich bags would have worked better than the OE hats.

R.E rust prevention, check to see if your exhaust manifold clamp next to the flexi is still there. Mine seems to have rusted off while still under the previous owners care....and now i've got 2 snapped exhaust studs on the head due to the extra stress it put around the head area. Replacement waiting to go on though...

Those hats are just not fit for purpose! When I got my car the suspension was original 2011 it was terrible my top mounts were so rusty the inner torx thread was gone I had to get the bolts blow torched off!

As for the exhaust clamp mine was missing also! Not a remnant of it remained so I had to find one and fit it luckily club 500 italia had one .. there have been so many little bits missing from my car I’ve had to find and fit! Like the flywheel inspection cover! Didn’t have a clue I didn’t have one till I posted a pic of my exhaust flexi on here!!

There's an area I found a couple of days ago which is well worthwhile attending to as a 'stitch in time' fix to ensure it doesn't turn into a bad MOT fail a few years down the line - there's a little alcove just behind the brackets where the front brake flexi pipes are attached to the body.

Presumably it's there because of the way the chassis legs and inner wings are assembled, but it's a perfect place for road muck to gather, and once it fills up it'll make a lovely little mud bath to rust out the chassis leg.

So next time you have the wheels off, dig out all the grot from just behind the brake pipe mounts and stick a bit of Hammerite or suchlike and some underseal in there, your car will thank you for it later on :)

Funny you should mention that … I was cleaning these little areas out the other day! I sprayed a load of waxoyl in there too!

The Panda (and probably the Ford Ka) is the same.. it's a handy little tray for keen gardeners to germinate seeds in.. :D

There's a drain hole at each end but they become blocked with even regular grit, never mind pieces of compost. Luckily the metal seems to be fairly robust, so it won't rot immediately but it's a good point to clean it out every three months or so (or whenever you're in the wheel arch).

If you apply paint etc. in there, make sure the drain "holes" (actually just a small kink in one of the panels that doesn't lie flush against the facing panel) don't get blocked by the paint.. and that paint doesn't run out of the hole, or you'll get a paint run down the inner chassis rail. It would bother me to see it, when I'm down there changing the oil or whatever.

Lately (maybe they're on a marketing push) I've been getting adverts on my Facebook etc. for something called Lanoguard. It looks like they squeeze a sheep until all the oil comes out of its fur.. (?) and then they turn it (the oil, not the sheep) into a grease, similar to Waxoyl or BiltHamber cavity wax products.

It stinks of sheep apparently, until it dries.. so what's not to like? :D ... but the reviews about it seem positive, so I'm tempted to give it a go... The only downside is that I'll have to jet wash the underside of my car thoroughly otherwise I'd be waxing over dirt and grit, which doesn't seem "the best way to do it").

Anyways, it covers everything (sub-frames, body etc.) and dries clear, so the surface just looks "waxy". Their USP is that it can withstand a jet-washer, so it won't get washed off.. but as with all products, they recommend an annual top-up (though even once every 2 years etc. has to be better than nothing).

Sounds like something which should be in a sticky somewhere (the rust prevention, not the gardening tips) to ensure our cars have a long and fruitful life (y)

This area worries me, not had a look inside I suspect rust from inside?

I had a look at that when my wings were off because it's a common rust trap on older Lancias / Alfas (esp the 156 GTA - the wings rust readily there and are made of unobtanium) and it didn't look like a particular area for concern, but on the 500 there's a bolt in that area which holds the bumper on which seems to gather a layer of dirt around it, so it can't do any harm to clean / rustproof that area when the wheelarch liners (or wings) are off.
