Hi.

Can anyone help me with a supplier for a stainless exhaust system or just the back box for now 2010 1.4 Sport. There seems to be an abundance of availability for the 1.2 Sport 8v but nothing for the 1.4.

I will stick with a steel replacement if nothing available:yuck:

Thanks for the link.............I was hoping to find something 'off the shelf' as tailor made comes out quite expensive.

Amazing the original has lasted 10 years and is still OK on the inner skin but outer skin has totally disintegrated and was noted as an advisory on MoT so figured might as well change it.

Just surprised lots available for 1.2 sport off the shelf with a few suppliers but nothing for 1.4 sport.

I would not have thought there would have been a difference really but assume the 1.4 sport must have been a lower volume sales

Probably still sound.. they just comment on the 'flaky layers'

A St.Steel full system is around the same as a Genuine FIAT full system ;)

But it sounds like you are more concerned over 'cosmetics' than getting another 10 years from it :)

Hi,

Thanks Portland Bill I will pursue if necessary as a last resort though given full 1.2 sport stainless exhaust 'after cat' can be found for £120ish and I do appreciate stainless comes in different grades.

Anymore help would be appreciated. I can't believe an exhaust can be this much of a problem as someone must in the past life had to procure one.

Briefly the rear box silencer was picked up on the MoT as an advisory for outer skin rotted and it is virtually non existent at the bottom.

Plenty of time before my daughter goes to uni but don't want to send her off with something that may fail so would rather change it and the whole system to stainless but just normal steel if have to but can't even find a normal steel system.

Do I have to pay dealer prices just to get an exhaust system for a 1.4 when 1.2 sports are well supported in the aftermarket:eek:

Help please all you 1.4 sport owners

Thanks the ad below on mine is just FUMEX exhaust extraction but will try the name you supplied on google

Farrah.....

Update...... tried the name and they do not list Fiat only Alfa so maybe the web has a cross deal on advertising but sadly no good.............

Someone must have had to have had a new exhaust on a 2007- 2014 500 1.4 sport surely with hands on experience

Prior to the introduction of catalytic converters, mild steel exhaust systems could have a short life, especially on vehicles that travelled shorter distances. Combustion creates water, which sits in a cool exhaust as a corrosive mixture.
Catalytic converters get hot quite quickly, so the whole exhaust heats up more quickly, and most of the water will be emitted as steam. This allows the exhaust system to last significantly longer. Mine was well over 10 years old when replacement was needed.

As a result of this, the market for replacement exhausts is now small, where once it was huge. Many of the aftermarket manufacturers have disappeared. The cost of creating bespoke systems, with all the right bends, silencer boxes, mountings, etc., is only recovered with the highest demand applications.

1.4 500s are not plentiful, so if the system is significantly different to the 1.2, demand will be small, so aftermarket systems will be either expensive, or cheap and poorly made. A garage at the bottom of my road now rarely bothers with aftermarket systems, as they rarely fit properly, and need heating and reshaping. With that extra labour, an OE system becomes cheaper.

Even an OE replacement could be lower quality than the original. When the vehicle is in production, the manufacturer buys large batches of exhausts, so the exhaust manufacturer has a jig and production line, and uses quality steel. Once production ends, demand drops to a very low level. The original exhaust manufacturer changes to the new model. The specifications, and sometimes the tooling may then be moved to another manufacturer, better set up for smaller batch quantities. This happens with radiators too. Whilst made by a different manufacturer, they are still OE replacements as original specs are used.

Looking at ePer, the parts listing, I see the centre section has a silencer, that is missing (not required) on the 1.2, but presumably due to different tailpipe designs, there are 8 different part numbers for the rear silencer. That makes sales volumes even smaller for each part.

From that, I'd not expect to find an aftermarket system at all, unless a manufacturer decides on the most popular, or perhaps the most aesthetic, and offers that to fit all. I think you have a simple choice of OE, or bespoke stainless.

I had a custom made stainless 816 made for my 0.9 twinair turbo a couple of years ago and it grumbles very nicely and snarls when I put my foot down. The cost was somewhat expensive, but the work/welding on it is pure welding porn. What was the cost I hear you say ? Double the cost of Portland Bills and then some. Yes I am mad, but it will last me until I hand in my licence :)
