Also the Abarth 595 version wil be a EV, but with a stronger electric motor.



I typically don’t like fake engine sound but they have to have a fake Abarth straight pipe sound, no one would buy it if it didn’t make any noise. Fiat please do not ruin the Abarth heritage. An Abarth that doesn’t have an engine is complete sacrilege.
 
The new 500 will be "EV" only.
The present 500 will run on for a few year and then get binned.

It would be a terrible move for fiat to do this.

Given the electric 500 is over £30k and most people buying a Fiat 500 want something small cute and cheap, if you are upgrading from an older day 3 year old Fiat 500 you are not going to want the “old model” and we are entering probably the biggest world wide recession in history, it’s unlikely people will be lining up to buy a £30k+ Small car.
Even Apple have recognised this fact and brought back the iPhone se seeing that people are not going to be splashing out on luxury in the next few years. I can imagine if Fiat don’t slap a petrol engine in there, it’s going to be a massive sales failure. That’s not to say people won’t buy the electric ones, just not the quantities needed by fiat to make it worth while, as it stands the 500 is really all that has kept them afloat for the last 10 years.

I assume the petrol version will be the old car only rather then the newer electric platform
 
That’s exactly the point. If you want to upgrade your “old” 500 which could be any between 2007 and 2020 to the newer model, you’re going to have to find £30k+

Or buy an older shaped car for a cheaper petrol engine version.

Alternatively what I can see a lot of people doing is saying screw it and going and buying a mini or some other quirky small car for considerably less. Even the electric mini has a significantly lower price tag

It’s true, and the Panda too.
 
I think manufacturers are penalised for overall emissions in ways that discourage them from producing cheap city cars with i/c engines, but can't remember the details. Note that VAG have stopped making i/c versions of the Up and its siblings, they are electric only. They've managed to keep them down to £20k or less though.

Less then are penalised more then are given emissions credits on largers cars
For example FCA ha a lower overall emissions target then most other manufacturers because they make. Smaller cars
