Technical 500 engine + bad advise

Whenever I've needed to remove a bonnet to replace an engine, I've always marked the position of the hinges carefully before removal. It saves a lot of heartache later.

Refitting body panels is a black art; most large car dealers have one, usually ancient, fitter who understands the magic.

I once took delivery of a new high end German car and was sure the drivers door wasn't sitting quite right . The selling dealer told me to bring it in on Tuesday, 'cos it was a job for Bert, and that's when he'd be working at this branch. Tuesday arrived, Bert was duly summoned, and this wizened old gentleman with faded overalls and a rollup dangling from the corner of his mouth drove it into a hut at the back of the site and shut the door. The complimentary coffee machine had barely done its stuff when Bert reappeared, job done - and it was perfect (y).

I asked him what he did.

"You wouldn't want to know" was his reply..

I’ve been told many times, you wouldn’t want to know, especially with bonnets. Lots of yanking and bending I believe.

The level will constantly drop as the water fills the air gaps.

As for the bonnet, there are 3 x 10mm bolts, there is movement side to side and up and down. Can be trial and error.

It's almost certainly the bonnet latch. Engine-out and radiator change don't need the bonnet removed, whereas the slam-panel almost certainly would have been removed.

The latch would have to come off the slam panel, otherwise it would be attached to the rest of the car via the bonnet release cable, and you can't get it clear of the car.

Anyway.. who knows how they did it? :D If the paint on the bonnet bolts is un-marked, they didn't touch it. It's much more likely to be the latch not put back in exactly the same place but that should have some adjustability in it. Probably just needs loosening off, easing upwards c. 3-5mm and then re-tightening.

Precisely where to bend, and how hard you need to yank, is the secret. You won't find this information on eLearn, or in any workshop manual ;).

Has the coolant level stabilised ? You seem to get there after all the hassle...

Yes! Yes it has!! Turned out to be air in the system!
It’s no wonder I freaked out at first with all I been through with the other engine!

Happy to say all seems fine I’m still checking coolant every day but I’m sure in time it will go back to once a week [emoji23]
