Technical 2013 Fiat 500s Crank/No Start

Update: I’ve gotten the car back from the Fiat workshop. The car started perfectly this morning for the third day in a row and there was no rough idle this time.

Though, I’ll update tomorrow now that the car is with me. Hopefully the car behaves with me and turns on first try??

Update: the car did not turn on [emoji849] all the parts are in working condition.

The next thing I’m going to look at is the cold start instruction in the ecu. I have been in contact with the Romanian guy on this forum who had the same problem

I’ll use his files and instructions and use his tests tomorrow

Re: Need help! 2013 Fiat 500s Crank/No Start on 1st try

If it's a purely cold-start issue (first thing in the morning or if the car has been in an underground car park for 8 hours) then it may be an ECU problem ("cold-start" instruction isn't being sent to the injectors). In the old money, there's no choke.

This seems to be it ^

What temperatures are you standing in?

Was it a lot warmer at the dealers ?

It was actually cooler at the dealership. I turned the car on one of the hotter days since 2 weeks, about 32C (it’s been pouring down rain) The temperature at the dealership would have been about 25,26C

Update: after doing the tests given by the Romanian guy on this forum who fixed the issue. I had to spray start spray into the air intake while someone else turned the ignition of the car. The car made the same funny cold start sounds but after a few more cranks, the car revved alive - and there was no rough idle. Hooray!

I’ve been given the files to flash the ecu with some corrected values.

Fiat did update the ecu but not for that particular issue, because apparently, TSB 14-007-18 REV b wasn’t available for my car (even though it is within the VIN that needed the update) and it was only America.

Carefully watch the 'selftest'

Of the dashboard..

And listen.. fuel pump whirring.. relays clicking

You might notice something behaving differently..

Give you something to investigate :)

As you can see in the video. Everything on the dash is fine. No fault codes found nothing. Just a funny crank no start issue. I always put the car in accessory mode and wait for the fuel pump before turning the ignition all the way.

Hopefully this ecu remap helps me ??

Update: I used the freeze spray on the MAP Sensor and the car turned on perfectly, no funny rev or idle.

The car is now booked into an ECU tuning place that will tune the vehicle and they are willing to fix the fuel mixture and injection

Has anyone suggested cleaning/replacing the MAP sensor? It's only a 5 minute job, so definitely worth a try if not been done already.

The sensor is fine (looked over by fiat and another mechanic too) The map sensor was only used to be frozen to -40C which allowed for my car to turn on first try. It tricks the computer for richer mixture.

The Romanian guy tried replacing virtually every sensor without result, I think the remap fixed it leading me to suspect a glitch in the ecu program causes the issue, but that its a glitch that "can" affect any car?

Update: the car didn’t turn on first try. They’ve rewritten scripts and commanded for rich fuel mixtures. No more can be done. Doesn’t help that the climate here isn’t ideal for cold starts with such extreme humidities most days.

I can’t invest any more money into the vehicle.

It’s for sure the fuel mapping as the car has been tested mechanically and it’s in perfect condition. Not much can be done by a third party. Fiat has spoken and said that it is a known issue but since there are no recalls, not much can be done.
