HI everyone, nothing required for this one, but your valued opinions.

Our 2008 MJD now has 115k racked up. A normal week can add 400 miles. Timing chain was replaced 110k, new brakes all round last year, fuel pump and lower struts the year before, seat belt module the year before that. So lots of money spent. MOT not due till march.

I have the chance of a 2011 Corsa limited edition 1.3 Ecoflex with 72k. Full service history, one owner from new! Hes looking for £2500. I'm guessing the engine is the same as the Fiat, which will help with MPG. Its coming to the range where the timing chain will need doing etc.

Is this a good time to get rid and get something newer, or would you spend more and get something around 50k, or just keep going, its running as well as ever?

TBH.. most of that is general wear and tear..

Whats likely to fail now?

Hatch wiring: cheap

Dash.. not so bad

Rear suspension: garage bill could write it off.. but there are budget options..

As others have said.. it should just keep going.

DMF is probably worst case failure

115k is just about run it, for an MJD. A fella I know had one which ran to the other side of 250k without any serious drama.

What will fail next is probably the clutch, so budget a few hundred quid around the 120-125k mark. The rest of it will wear out as and when it decides it's had enough of life.

Expect a new radiator sometime in the next 18 months for example but after the clutch and a new rad' it'll mostly be just normal wear and tear (discs, pads and exhausts) until you get to the 180k mark, when it'll have a mid-life crisis. You'll need a lot of suspension parts around then.

High 100k's might or might not give you DPF/EGR problems.. although your beast is doing a good weekly mileage, so your EGR might get to the moon (perigee distance 225,622 miles) before it dies. Similarly your alternator might decide that it's fulfilled its mission around then.

So.. I'd moonshot it first, if it was me, then see what else better suits my latest family/commuting requirements (or strikes my fancy) at that time.

By comparison, a nice tidy Corsa is a bit .. "lower earth orbit". Are you a moonshot guy or a lower earth orbit guy? :D

Thanks for the opinions, they are valued. Stick is the clear message here.

Its just that a guy I work with is selling the Corsa, hes had it from new, serviced every year etc and now he fancies something a bit posher (I think he's after a C class Merc!). I dare say someone is always selling a car should we need one in a hurry.

Hatch wiring wont be a problem, the struts failed a couple of years ago and I've left them like that so she isn't using the boot all the time. A new clutch etc doesn't eat too far in to the £2.5k we would need to fork out for the Corsa, of course, we would recoup some of that selling the Fiat..... but she loves the Fiat.

A nice problem to have I suppose, car running ok and another available at a reasonable price :)
