Hi

The garage service our 2014 500 TA 105, i supplied the parts all bosch filters and the correct NGK plugs. Shell ECT 0-30 oil

after the service we had the low oil pressure light, the engine ran very rough and stalled. I towed it back to the garage for investigation

up until the service it ran fine, apart from being a little noisy on the chain/belt side.

does anyone have any ideas what could be the issue, only thing that is different is last time i serviced it with fiat parts and the fiat selinna digitek oil

I believe the oil is so thin it pours like water. It also drains like it, as despite Available Car Supermarket for example, who publish their job sheets, a TA engine takes more than 2.8 litres of oil they put in. My mechanic has put 3.3-3.5 litres in before now on my Panda TA 4x4. Did mechanic give you remainder of the oil?

I have regular fault with my car where goes into limp home mode morning after oil change. Oil needs checking cold on flat surface, but only darkens after couple of weeks, impossible to read in meantime. First time it did it, took 5 cold starts and 140 miles before cured itself.

Most recent time my Dad restarted it after I limped back home and ran it round to limiter in 1st which appears to have cured it. I don't use official oil. Can only assume uniair unit sticks, though main dealer told me car doesn't need to relearn anything. Hope sorted soon. (y)

Hi the garage mentioned it displayed the low oil pressure on first start after the oil change, i think it cleared itself and we drove it from the garage but later on in the evening it displayed it again, ran rough briefly and cut out.

i supplied 4L of Shell ECT and only a little was left so it has plenty of oil

so you think its ok just to push through with it?

Long shot but im wondering if perhaps the bosch oil filter isnt flowing as much as the genuine fiat filter. I read somewhere it had been reported a problem with some non genuine filters

Not current oil change but one before I gave mechanic Bosch P7159 oil filter and it was fine. Think we both have Euro 6 TA engines, there's something about not using Selenia oil they don't like. My previous Panda TA 4x4 was Euro 5 and got aftermarket oil and filter and never complained. No idea why. Mechanic has said I am welcome to give him the bits but his work then not guaranteed. Yours can prob get a Fiat filter and Selenia Digitek and do oil change again, possibly at your expense. Anyone with correct diagnostics can also reset the uniair unit. Whether this will fix yours I wouldn't like to say.

I don't think it would cause the low oil pressure problem, but are you sure the oil you have used meets the Fiat spec in the handbook? When I had my 2011 TA there were a few oils that met the correct specification, including a Petronis (who own Selenia) and Castrol Edge. However, the 2015 500X Multiair spec could only use Selenia Digitek.

I don't think you should get too hung up on the oil used.

If it (0W30) is the correct viscosity then there's no reason why the oil pressure light should stay on. The ingredients found in "official" oils are to address particular issues with different manufacturers' engines. Fiat's TA probably needs additional protection or treatment around the cylinder head.. so the official oil may be just contain an extra % of some chemical that provides a particular lubrication, avoids a reaction with a particular component (seal or gasket) and/or it provides additional cleaning ability (particularly as TA likes immaculate oil).

Is there a specific oil-change technique on the TA? If the head relies on hydraulic (i.e. oil operated) cams or valves to control the engine valve timing then do these need to be primed in some way? The user guide might tell you.

Disregard the oil filter. It's highly unlikely that it is not flowing enough 0W30 oil (i.e. faulty) that it can cause a low pressure. If it has an anti-drain valve (I suspect Bosch would... a very cheap filter might not) then that should collect and hold enough oil for the next start.. although 0W30 is so thin that it wouldn't take more than a few seconds for the pump to lift it to the top of the motor, even if the filter was empty.

Redlining the engine when there's an oil pressure warning light on is a bit "driveway mechanics" so please don't do it.. or at least don't write it on here that you do it in case it upsets me.. :D There's no oil pressure.. and the only thing keeping your metal parts from scraping to buggery and melting to each other is the thin smear of oil that sits in the 0.1mm of space between the moving parts.

There's a little filter in the TA head that can be removed (it's not an official "service" activity) and cleaned out. There's a thread on here or the Panda thread that describes how to do it. There may be mileage in removing it, cleaning it and putting it back.

I've just remembered - some years ago I had a BMW Mini Cooper, with the Chrysler sourced engine. The oil pressure light on that came on after a service. Online info suggested this could be an incorrectly fitted oil filter - its the same type as the TA, the filter matrix fits within a housing, rather than being the cartridge type. In the Mini, it's possible to put the cartridge element in the wrong way up - it has a similar looking rubber seal at each end. I took the housing off mine and turned the filter over, problem went away.
Could be worth fitting a genuine filter element.
Incorrect oil would not cause this problem if it's the right viscosity, but it's vital to use the correct specification in Twinair/Multiair engines as the wrong oil can foul up the electrohydraulic valve actuators after a while.

I had this once when I changed the oil. In my case the problem was I had followed the instructions for changing the filter which involved putting new filter in cassette and screwing that into place. When I took cassette back off I found the sticky-out bit on the filter (anti-drain?) hadn’t located into hole in engine and instead had bent the filter. Correct fitting of filter should be to locate it onto engine then screw cassette into place over it. Easy enough to check by taking the filter cassette back off.

The reason it runs rough is because the oil pressure cannot support the Uniair to inject properly.

I have purposely use Selenia for my 2012 .

Dipstic being 'oil coloured'

Use a piece of kithen towel.

Lay the hatched part of dipstick across it.

There is your oil.. ;)

Weird one.. but really wants to go back under the spanners.

Where is rallycinq when you need ta specifics ....
