I finally managed to get Multiecuscan to work by getting a new interface.

It shows that the engine ECU has been reprogrammed once and that its total runtime is 39570 minutes.

However the ABS runtime shows as 76,606 minutes and the steering as 77,835 minutes.

Does this indicate that about half the run time and therefore half the mileage have been reprogrammed away ?

The mileage the reprogram took place at does not coincide with a service in the service book.

How many miles is the speedo reading?

Just under 40,000 miles

Operating time of 77k minutes over 40,000 miles would equate to an average speed of about 30mph over the vehicle's lifetime, which is probably about right for mixed driving. I'd suggest the ECU runtime was reset during it's reprogramming.

I had a car that had to have a new engine ECU and I bought a secondhand one which was virginised. That process would have reset the run time no doubt.

If there are outstanding manufacturer updates, sometimes ECU's get reflashed by franchised dealers at service time. Such reflashing may (or may not) reset the run time counter.

If all is working as it should be, I wouldn't stress about it.

I take it the mileage shown on the display is from the ECU and not stored in the trip computer itself.

PS.

Just been looking online and digital reclocking appears to be no problem at all.

I remember the local shop owner where I used to live physically winding back the mileometer by hand from his MK3 Cortina in between serving customers.
