Technical 2 x Airbag lights and fuel cut off unavailable Warnings

Will need to get it plugged in now. This morning I did all the tailgate wiring (all had exposed conductors and two wires broken) and I've replaced the earth strap with a spare BMW one I had on the shelf. It was very corroded at the gearbox point so after cleaning it and coating the surfaces with vaseline, i know that's all good as well. I also put a known good battery that is fully charged to it via jump leads.

The plus point is we now have a working boot light! My daughter also said that a couple of times she's been driving and the "boot open" warning has come up. So that'll be sorted as well.

The negative point is the airbag lights are still on along with the small orange fault triangle, the fuel cut off is still inactive according to the dash and the seatbelt light is on despite both seatbelts being fastened. HOWEVER, the warning tone does not sound.

So I'm stumped. Car is now back on the road up to nottingham and I will have it back in approx. a month.

Anyone near nottingham with the software that can plug it in and give me some pointers for when it comes back? I will of course pay for any time.

I need to sort the software out myself really.
Hi, my daughter had warning lights on her 2008 mid. We took it to a place in long Eaton called Autowave. He read the faults for us. We had to replace the airbag module but it's been fine ever since (2 yes now).. this place is only 10 mins from Nottingham university.

Fantastic. Many thanks. I'll bare that in mind.

Small update although no remedy as yet. I was up with my daughter this weekend and had a chance to plug it in. Had the following come up and I cleared it down a couple of times but these kept appearing. Obviously not the fiat software but may throw some light on the issue to anyone in the know?

OK, it's been in to a Fiat Alfa specialist today and he reckons its the Airbag ECU module.

Problem is, he thinks it is. Like all things it's a bit of guess work going on here as he cannot communicate with the the ECU and the fuel cutoff is inoperative.

So rather than bite the bullet with a brand new one, I'm looking for a second hand good module. He says best to stick with the same part number so:

Anyone got an airbag module, part number 51782985?

Can't find any on eBay at the moment.

I've got the car another 2.5 weeks so really need to get this sorted now before it disappears back up to Notts.

It doesn’t need to be identical part number. You can get one on eBay for £95. See the other thread similar to this. ECU has been changed but hadn’t fixed it. I’m thinking it might be the body computer.

He's saying it does need to be the same part number or the superseded one but that may then demand a software update on the car. There are a few on there yes, but they are 2011-15, 2012 on or state "please match numbers". I deal in BMW parts and the world of modules is a nightmare when selling them as people buy them thinking they are all the same then back them because guess what? It don't work! Drives me mad.

I've found a company that can check and repair our module and warrant it for 24 months. But it ain't cheap so seeing that I really need to get this fixed, I don't want to mess about buying modules that may well contain crash data or not be compatible, I don't really see I have a choice. Going in there this morning to discuss options.

Either that or buy her a Polo as I have a few contacts in the VAG network. Which I don't have in the Fiat world.

I have changed dozens of these without a problem. There are two basic types the metal cased ones in the early cars and the black plastic cases ones. No reprogramming is required.

I've sent ours off for repair. It's a risk as it may not even be that but with so many of these getting written off, my reckoning was that most of the second hand ones on eBay will probably have crash data stored.

The guy doing the ecu repair warrants it for 24 months and turns it round in 24 hours. So similar timescales to if I bought one off eBay and waited for delivery.

I'll report back what happens.

Is this the bloke in Rochester on eBay? I’ve had several done by him.

Yep. And it's back and fixed. All lights out and no faults stored.

Sent it Tuesday afternoon, he got it yesterday, fixed it and posted it and I got it back today. Fitted it at 2:30pm this afternoon. Less than 48 hours. A very good service to be honest and I'd recommend them.

I've learnt a long time ago that you can mess about for weeks on stuff like this and just keep stabbing in the dark. I could have bought a second hand module for £90 but the chances are it wouldn't have worked or it would have had crash data stored. I doubt I'd got it as quick as 48 hours either. A new one was £300 plus VAT. I have a good idea what Fiat would charge had I handed them the keys and said "fix that".

I am self employed and I'd waste more than £200 in time messing about. Sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and let someone else do the leg work. I know what I charge for parts and labour and I don't issue many invoices with less than £200 in the bottom right hand corner!

Plus, as I've stated, I have a very narrow window to get this fixed. But, it's now fixed with 24 month warranty and daughter can now return to Uni without any worries. That in itself is worth the expense.

I pay £30. Send it off by Hermes, get 24 hour turnaround. Had several done.

This is it, Continental unit!!

As said in the other thread there may be a loose connection on the DRL will this have spiked the CAN?? I replaced the lamp the morning or the day prior to her noticing the issue.

TVM in advance
