Hi guys,

I m new on this forum and I found this site with Google. I m a Dutch girl with a Fiat 500 forum 2009.

Since yesterday my car stopped working! I cannot get it in the gear anymore. It is an automatic Fiat 500.

On the picture below you see the icon of the gearbox. It is blinking. Also the text is shown: "CHECK GEARBOX, CONSULT MANUAL" (you see it in Dutch on my picture ;)).

To me it seems that it is a "computer" issue because I do not hear any strange sounds. It seems like some kind of computer is preventing my car going into gear.

So, I looked on the internet. Some say my car just needs to be reset. Some say the complete gearbox is dead.

Can you guys give a guess of what could be wrong with my car? And besides that what your advise is? Bring it to an official Fiat dealer?

You have to know that car repair company's in the Netherlands tend to not always be honest and sometimes charge you with unnecessary costs.

I know that it is impossible to give me a 100% diagnose remotely but maybe you guys can give me some input on this.

ps. Sorry for my bad English but I tried for the best :D

Greetings Kim

Hi Kim.

The duologic gearboxes are a complex system.

Essentially a NORMAL car gearbox..and clutch.

But.. it uses a computer driven ROBOT to work the clutch..and change the gears.

Common faults;
Low fluid.. on top of the gearbox is a small clear plastic container.. the fluid lives in there.. often there are small leaks.. leading to a low level.

The information here on Fiat Forum is massive.. almost too much..

Do the basics 1st..

Check the level of fluid.

Uncouple the NEGATIVE battery csble for 3 hours.

Then

Reconnect cable.. see if system works.

Alfa romeo use the same system.. there may be a special garage nearer you

Thanks for this first and quick response! I will try these basics first. Will go to the car now and report back later.
