Maybe a daft question then again maybe not but is a fiat punto 1.2 gearbox the same as a fiat 500 1.2 gearbox??

They have a different part number so the quick answer is no.. but the differences might be trivial, so it's not to say one won't fit the other.

The main difference I can see is that the Punto has a different final drive ratio (maybe because it's a heavier car) but quite often the changes made to gear boxes have the same overall effect, even if some of the components are changed.

Why are you after a new gearbox? If yours is broken and you really can't find a 500 one anywhere (somehow....?? - ask typecastboy if he has one lying around) then the better source for an alternative might be the latest Panda.

Unfortunately not, I never bother taking gearboxes out. Always plenty on ebay though for varying costs. I used to have a parts supplier who had an industrial unit with one whole wall lined up with low mileage engines and the other wall with gearboxes. As he only did pick up not delivery he couldn't sell them.

Thanks for the reply guys the sisters 500 has a hole somewhere in it oil has leaked and damaged the clutch only found out when the clutch was replaced and i have a punto sitting ready to get scrapped just wondered if they would be compatible thanks again guys

Yes.. it's a duff oil seal probably.. either the gearbox or could be the crank oil seal (depending on whether it's gear oil or engine oil your clutch is covered in).

The seals aren't too dear, compared to the labour cost of removing the gearbox to fit it, so if you've dismantled it this far, you're 95% of the way there.
