Is The 105 TA Engine Still Available?

Hi everyone.

Back in 2014 my wife got a 500S with the 105 TA engine on a 4 year PCP and now nearly 4 years on she has the usual options. One obviously being get another EXCEPT that at the moment Fiat donít seem to be offering the 105 version, only the 85 TA and the 1.2 69 (HP as then are now calling it).

Weirdly I took delivery of my Golf R in late July and if I had ordered just a little later I would still be waiting to take delivery of one that has 10 HP less due to the new WLTP requirements (as has the Audi S3) and was wondering if the 105 TA has suffered a similar fate. Iíve even read that BMW have dropped the M3 from their range due to the life cycle of the current model and the cost of compliance with the new regulations

Iíve Googled and searched here but canít find any answers so was wondering if someone here can kindly shed some light on this?

Very many thanks in anticipation

Re: Is The 105 TA Engine Still Available?

It's probably a mixture of WLTP and low sales volumes making it not worthwhile to tweak it to comply with new regulations. Most of the 500s in the UK are the 1.2 version, with a few others being the TwinAir 85bhp. The TwinAir 105bhp seems pretty rare and the diesel was even rarer - the latter got dropped from the UK line up some time ago.

Having looked on Fiat's Italian website, the 500 isn't sold there with the TwinAir 105bhp engine either, just the 85bhp version, so (unlike some other UK specific restrictions on engines/spec) I don't think this is a UK specific decision. The other cars that had the 105bhp TwinAir fitted included the 500L and the Alfa MiTo. The MiTo is now out of production and they're selling off stock, whilst the 500L engine range is reduced to just diesels and the 1.4 normally aspirated petrol - in the UK it's just the 1.4 petrol by the look of it, so there was probably no reason to carry on with the 105 TwinAir, especially as the new 1.0 3cylinder FireFly is now online and being rolled out across other models (500X & Jeep Renegade so far).

I'd suggest giving an 85bhp TwinAir a try if you haven't already. Failing that many people seem to be trading up to the Abarth 595 as they're not greatly expensive in comparison.

Two years ago I was going to trade in my 85TA for a 105TA Lounge but my local dealer, who also sells Abarth, suggested that for approx. an extra £1k I would be better off with the entry level 595.

I am glad I took his advice....

(n.b. have just used the configurators and the 595 is £1k more than the 85TA Lounge now, if there was a 105 they would be the same price!)
Thanks varesecrazy thanked for this post

@105S I found this. Makes a TA85 good value. https://broadspeed.com/new_cars/Fiat/500

From the same website, you can get a 1.2 Panda in Pop trim for £7600, or in Easy trim for £8200.

IMO that makes the whole 500 range look overpriced. The Panda has more space inside, and twice as many doors. Paying more for less is remeniscent of buying ladies undergarments .

I wonder if Fiat will start reducing the price of the Panda, to try and compensate for the nonsensical ncap rating.

I doubt they'll reduce the price (reducing the list price affects secondhand values and would seriously mess with their pcp calculations), but there could be some great discounts to be had if they end up stuck with a load of unsold cars.

I also think Fiat may end up with a lot of Pandas being returned at the end of their agreement period whose retail value is less than the outstanding balloon payment.

Re: Is The 105 TA Engine Still Available?

Thank you all for your responses. Originally I tried to to get my wife to get an Abarth, before the 500S, but she was having none of it. However looking at the current PCP deals it makes perfect sense to go with a base 595 it looks like she may now go for that which means that I can have some fun whilst driving her car!!!!

I was offered a £1000 off an Abarth before I'd even sat down earlier this year.
Ended up with £4000 off my Turismo due to the Privilege scheme. (I'm a NHS slave)

The standard 595 is a nice car, the power delivery is a little better lower down the rpm range than the car's with the Garret turbos.
All the IHI turbo one's I've driven feel quite buzzy and zippy where the Turismo and Comp with the Garret tend to woof, bark and growl, but then go all the way to insanity where the IHI cars tend to lose a bit of puff.

The standard also drives a little better on our roads with the standard 16" wheels.
With 17" the ride is, er, an acquired taste!

Steer clear of red, it's an awful shade that can appear a bit pink.

Live in the sticks? Consider factory Xenons, the standard halogens are pretty poor on unlit roads.

If you do save some on the price, think about spending it on a Monza exhaust.
They sound pukka with them on.

The NCAP rating is perfectly accurate. The 500 and Panda are a joke tbh.

The F30 3-series is now out of production anyway, so the M3 would naturally have disappeared until the new G20 based car came on-stream.

However, WLTP has decimated company car choices - we are limited to 119g/km CO2 and many of the traditional choices have dropped out of this band since WLTP was introduced.

All our car orders have been suspended until the end of Q1 2019 now in the hope manufacturers catch up, especially with sensibly priced hybrids (ie. not £60k for a Volvo S60!). We have even dropped Mercedes and JLR completely.

I know. I can't afford to replace my 5-series with another 5-series when the time comes, as the monthly tax bill could buy me a Sei Sporting every month!

In fairness, I do 35k miles a year on company business, often driving 300+ miles in a day, with meetings in-between the driving...

I'd love to run a big Alfa or Fiat, but we don't have the option of an Alfa and Fiat just don't make big cars anymore.
