So I was driving my fiat and all of a sudden the warning lights on the dash board came on and it was flashing “fuel cut off unavailable” and “stop start unavailable”. The mileage is also flashing..

I have read that my car thinks it has had an accident but I haven’t. I have tried the reset in the manual to no available and have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

These are the classic symptoms of the all too common hatch wiring fault.

Check the wiring loom carefully where it enters the rear hatch; you'll need to peel back the rubber grommet to do this, and may have to unwrap some tape from the loom. I'd strongly recommend disconnecting the battery before doing this, but you'll need to unlatch (but not lift) the rear hatch first, or use the manual release. Inspecting the wiring with the battery connected could lead to further damage to critical electronic components.

Odds are you'll find some broken wires and/or damaged insulation.

Report back and tell us what you find, and we'll take it from there.

Hi i have the exact same problem, i have booked it in to a fiat dealer for next Monday is it i have managed to do 15 miles so far is it still okay to drive. As the message says "fuel cut off unavailable" i believe that the switch is unavailable and that fuel actually hasn't been cut off?

Hi, sorry to hear that! I think it is fine to drive but there is no guarantee that the air bag will not go off so use with caution! Mine has now been fixed - it was the airbag control unit which needed replacing. It took the garage almost 2 weeks to find out what it was so maybe worth telling them to check it.

Hi Sophie, thank you for getting back to me. Do you know how much this costs to repair just so i can be prepared haha! i know the garage is charging me £100 for diagnostics how much was a new air bag control unit?

Just took mine out as i believe its a common fault. Anyone know the best place to get one and have it learned to the car in the manchester area??

Dont know if its coincidental or not but earlier in the day my daughters DRL stopped working NSF.

I replaced it but there appeared to be a loose connection on the multiplug or in the connector that clips onto the lamp.

Could it have spiked the CAN or am i overthinking it??

Yes, you’re overthinking. Nothing to do with the Airbag module. You can get good ones on eBay for £95. It will just need a proxy alignment to stop the flashing mileage once fitted. If anyone in here is nearby there are plenty of us that will do it for free. I believe fiat charge over £100.

Fiat 500 Twinair Plus 2011 with EXACTLY the same symptoms.

An experienced Electrical Engineer I examined the suggested hatch wiring and it looked fine to me. My better half, who is not an electrical type, insisted we fully expose the wiring run after reading the posts on this site. See attached photos for the resulting mess we discovered.

If we need a new airbag module they cost over £200. I can do the required Proxy Alignment myself to get a replacement working but a garage would obviously charge for this. Then there is the wiring. I reckon it will take me 4 to 6 hours to cut, pull back and splice the wiring. A garage will charge by the hour for that. If the garage has to spend time finding the fault in the first place, well it is getting expensive.

It might be worth having A REALLY GOOD LOOK at this wiring if you have a Fiat 500.

I think repair kits are available in the Bay of Fleas... I've seen replacement sections of wires with pre-fitted connectors that you use to replace the entire worn section.

You would still need to cut the wires and fit connectors to your wiring but it might be quicker and save faffing around looking for the right weight of wire of the right colour etc.

I'd strongly recommend disconnecting the battery before doing this, but you'll need to unlatch (but not lift) the rear hatch first, or use the manual release.

Where is this manual release? The Younger Mrs S.' 500 Rasputin didn't want to open off the latch the other day (I think it got confused after I'd accidentally "locked" the car with the door open and then wouldn't respond until I'd unlocked it, locked it and then unlocked it again... ) but until it sorted itself out I was wondering how I'd open the hatch if it was a terminal hatch solenoid/wiring problem.

There’s a little lever on the lock part attached to the tailgate. It’s manual so doesn’t require electric I think from memory.
