Hey everybody! So, I was driving my 2016 500 on a highway this weekend and I reached the cruising speed of 130km/h. All fun and good, but after I exited the highway, I observed that my speed was still indicated at around 110km/h. And no matter what I did, it wouldn’t drop. Even with the car stopped, the speedometer was still stuck. Did this ever happen to you? Any ideas on what the problem might be? Cheers! IMG_1940.JPGIMG_1927.JPG

Thump the top of the dash? As its a mechanical movement i guess its got stuck ?

It sometimes moves...it’s moving somewhere between 60 and 180 :) But most of the times it’s just stuck at 110 top of the dash...

I dunno if the 500 speedometer is electrical rather than mechanical. If it's electrical it will have a stepper motor on the back of the speedo to convert the signal voltage to a movement that turns the needle.

A new stepper would fix the problem... but I dunno if/where you could get one. Certainly there must be people who can fix speedo's and instrument cluster near you who would know what parts to use and how to do it.

It’s just not economical to get it repaired when you can pick them up for less than fifty quid on eBay. If you wait for a bit you can often find the new lcd one for around £120.

They do indeed have stepper motors. It’s a movement a bit like a clock, where there are concentric shafts (a pin-like one in the centre, with the speedo needle a very tight fit on it, and a larger hollow plastic shaft with the rev counter needle a looser fit). My guess is that the speedo needle’s been pressed on a little too hard and is binding against the rev counter needle. Taking the cluster apart is not too difficult and worth a try considering the expense of fitting a different cluster (adjusting odometer etc., hard to find one with mileage less than yours) at least to see whether it’s a simple binding problem that perhaps became noticeable after a change in temperature or a higher speed than normal...

It’s interesting that you have a left-hand-drive 500 in England; maybe this is a good opportunity to fit a miles-per-hour speedo or at least the graphics for it while you have it apart.

My thoughts exactly - this is precisely what I would do in a similar situation.

Do you know if there's a guide on here on how to do this?

My car suddenly developed a sticking speedo needle – do you think this this weekend's hot weather could have caused it?

Did you ever get this sorted - I’ve got the same problem with mine.
