General Headrest Corrosion - Tip

Eh up all,

As some of you know i got my daughter a 11 plate 1.2 Lounge last week and am slowly working my way through the mechanics - preventative and cosmetics.

Our front headrest steel legs were heavily oxidised - from what ive looked at at this age most i saw have been the same.

Anyway - as daughters do this was a major issue !!!!!!!!! ( this was after been under the car sorting a list as long as my arm out on brakes / oil / sump !!")

So after pondering and looking at the finish i elected to :-

Try a cutting compound - no effect
T Cut - no effect

So :-

Got some 800 wet and dry
Water

Rubbed until the corrosion was gone - surface was dull with fine scratches as you would expect.

Then used 3M MOP polish by hand and hey presto sparking finish returned.

Its worth 15 minutes of time and brings the rests up a treat.

Wire wool works well on chrome.. it doesn't scratch too much at all.

Or, dare I say it, Solvol Autosol.. which you must have a tube of *somewhere* in an old box or cupboard in the garage..


You probably ought to wax it too... or the rust pimples will come back.

Aye - got metal polish but from what i can deduce its not chromed just highly polished steel.

I think thats why the wet sand worked followed by 3M compound.

could be wrong pal .

Cheers for the wire wool tip got that too.

Did the second headrest last night - defo just polished steel not chromed.

Just steel? What a bunch of cheapskates!

Still, Solvol is a metal polish.. so it would work every now and again to keep the specks at bay.

WD40 often works on light oxidised surfaces...

Damp aluminium foil works well to remove corrosion from shiny steel or chrome parts.

Had nine over a year and never noticed it till now
Just given mine a quick clean up with autosol metal polish not perfect but a lot better now
