All,

Got the car home last night on blocks and all wheels off ready to start the work on my newly acquired 500 ( daughters )

First set of questions:-

Should it have a splash guard to cover the engine underneath - no sign of anything at all ? is it lost or was it ever there ?

Brakes are dismantled and new discs and pads to fit - but is the top "pivot" bolt supposed to come out so you can separate the caliper from the carrier. It appears to be a 8mm hex but i have eased off trying to remove it just in case its a complete unit ? THe things in there under some torque so began tho think for some bizarre reason Fiat have designed it not to be split - surely not !!

Rear brakes are turning free but drum will not slip over - easing tool to be used tonight (y)

Waxoyl warming up in house for a good blather underneath

Nothing else to mention thus far but any help with the above would be appreciated

As expected though :-

Sump is rusty - as expected - so need to treat that
Needs some TLC on bodywork - no issues
Alloys area bit poor paint wise - will respray in spring
Broken center cap needs a new/used one
Good wet vac inside

Cheers all - thanks again for all advice received so far

No 1.2s don’t have a sump cover, you can get them (eBay from Poland)but not sure if it affects cooling, would help with the rusty sump. If your doing a heavy service what about changing the thermostat housing if you have the plastic pipe version to the all metal?

There are threaded holes(the ones the little locating pins go in) in the drums to put bolts in to force the drum off, this was by no means straightforward for me destroyed the fitting kit and pulled out one piston with then the problem seized snapped bleed valves(don't try to turn hub that's I think how the piston might have come out)

John202020,

Eh up again.

Yea did same on my F plate 4x4 rear drums, many years ago.

You any knowledge on taking this top pivot bolt out on the front caliper top ( where it goes into the rubber slider bush) at all, seems odd its "fixed" but dont want top get my breaker bar out and snap the thing.

All

I think ive answerd my own question ......

The 8MM hex chrome slider bolt can be undone but apparantley its under some torque ?

I can get a breaker bar on the job but as ive got the whole assembly off is it worth the risk.

I would only re grease with red rubber grease on the slider .

Dont want to risk shearing the bolt if honest

Welcome anyone with any experience

ive done loads of discs and pads but learnt to never assume anything always seek advice....

Cheers all

TTR see my other recent posts for a grim list of things to look out for.

I can't remember... but it rings a bell... whether or not the Younger Mrs S'. Cinquecento had similar calipers with the strange top bolt.

Obviously someone put it together, so given a big enough hammer it should be possible to take it apart... :D but the bolt is pressed in there (or at least pretty tight) and it doesn't seem to be supposed to come out. Certainly to fit new pads it doesn't need to come out.

Have you separated the caliper from the carrier? From memory the top bolt has a rubber sleeve over the "hex" side, that fits into the carrier so it acts like a pivot. You can just ease the two sections apart..

The other side of the bolt (where it emerges from the caliper body) has the threaded section that screws into the suspension pillar.

Eh up .

Elected to leave the caliper and carrier in one piece as at this point ive no reason to take apart, swapped disc and pads easy enough and theres enough movement in the top slider.

In spring i will strip it ( just to see the assembly) but its not vital to do so at this point in time, its just all my other car have stripped the carrier from the caliper every time ive done anything ( old habits die hard...)

Cheers for the reply

Car should be done by Friday - still working through the list to check i got of here !!

Happy days
