General New model decision!

Wow, thank you all for your comments which are very useful & thought provoking :)

The reason for the bigger car is my nearly 80 year old mum will be giving up driving soon or maybe I should say her old reliable Toyota Corolla estate is on its last legs & I think she’s pretty relieved. We share a house, so my little 500 really isn’t big enough to have as the only car, especially When my sons who are over 6ft come to visit, lol!

I loved having a brand new car, as any issues etc have been sorted straight away so I’m pretty sure I’ll go brand new again. I’m erring towards an X after reading good reviews on here & it looks good too.

Thanks again for your help!

Not really. There was a good rationale given in the original post why they offered the two choices they gave... X or L. Sometimes it's best just to accept that someone else has already thought about the question to some extent before they asked it. There's only so much oxygen in the world... let's not waste it with stupidity.

And this is a Fiat Forum... it's a pity we're not all at least a little bit more "on side" and try to promote the brand at least a little bit. We get plenty of "the stoopid" every day from people who know Jack S*** about cars but insist you are a berk for not driving something like their nice reliable, rust free Hyundai Zimmer, Toyota Carehome or VAG Vag'. :D

There must be a forum for people who don't like Fiat... (Hint: I don't think this should be it. :) )

Well, that’s me well and truly told :) Many apologies for the offence caused but am not here to promote the brand but to give an honest opinion - and it is good to see a fair range of opinion in the thread. Good luck to the op with whatever choice they go for (y)

If you do decide on brand new then I would push you towards the X rather than the L - it's literally just been heavily(ish) facelifted & had new engines added, including a new 1.0 3cylinder 120bhp engine which seems to have impressed even the most pro-German car magazines. You ought to be able to get a decent saving off of list price by looking online at Carwow, or by going for a pre-registered car - there are quite a few brand new 500x's with just delivery mileage on AutoTrader.

The 500L had a facelift not long ago, but it's an older design now and as has already been mentioned, a tad awkward in its own skin - it's almost like Fiat weren't really sure whether it was going to be a big 500 or a giant Panda - both ideas would be fine by themselves but when it's mixed together it becomes a bit of a problem. The biggest problem with it now though is the engine range currently appears to be limited to a 1.4 16v petrol without a turbo, which whilst ok for its size, isn't going to move a 500L with passengers & luggage with any great pace. If you decide on a 500L I'd probably try & find one 18 months old as it'll have lost a fortune in those 18 months and shouldn't therefore cost you so much in lost value in the following years. (y)

Citroen C3 Aircross worth considering. Maybe take family members with you to check they're comfy.
