t currently electric cars arnt ready for the mass market in a few years it will almost certainly change but today to many little issue's are in the way

In May 2018 there were 150,000 new plug in vehicles (phev and Ev) registered in the uk, they are not only ready for the mass market, they are already well and truly IN the mass market.

Plug intypes still have a petrol or diesel engine so don't have the drawbacks of pure electric

And 150k is still less then the ammount of conventional powerd cars sold simply because for many a pure electric cars isn't yet practice for some they are but for far more the. Arnt
And you can seriously expect people to buy them until they are at the stage
I fully expect sales to start growing of them over the next 5-10 years and will eventually overtake fuel powered cars as the network of charging points improves battery's improve ect

So there are 30+ million cars on the uk roads and yes by a percentage all electric cars represents a small fraction of the number, then again there have been over 100 years of petrol and Diesel engine cars, where as there have only been mass market electric vehicles for the last few years, they now sell ten time the number of electric (plugin) vehicles that they sold even just 4 years ago, so the market for electric vehicles is growing rapidly, as a response to your previous comment they are mass market ready and are in the mass market, regardless of your personal views, there are no massive floors in the technology it is already well tried and tested, 400,000 mile Tesla’s show that.

Hybrid plug ins are a clever stop gap in the car market, people will buy them because they offer the best of both electric and fuel powered engines, they will install a home charger and get into the habit of charging their car, they will get you a reasonable distance on electricity alone and get customers used to the process of owning an electric car and give them a taste of not having to fill the tank all the time, manufacturers know the future is undoubtedly electric so this teaches customers how they will manage ownership of an all electric car in the future, and makes people more likely to buy an all electric car in the future, but they are only a stop gap, I would not expect in 30 years time that any company will make a hybrid (not for the developed world)

But the Solutions need to be in place before people can use the cars
If I bought one tomorrow (which I can't because a car with enough range would be out my price range)
If wouldn't be any good as I can change it at home or at work nor my local supermarket town centre ect most of the places I go don't have charging facilities so unless I went out of my way for the day just to charge the car up

Issue's like that need to be sorted before mass adoption can begin and that's what hold many back from getting them
When they are affordable to me and there's enough changing points that don't require 6-8 hours a time to charge I'd get one

How often do you do journeys over 200 miles?

Did you not watch the video?
Sorry, I didn't reply to this.

The noise and the beat music put me right off. I tried, I really did, but I couldn't do it. Turn the rubbish noise off, and the the verbal info was lost. Turn it on, and I couldn't cope.

I suspect that there’s virtually no chance of seeing an electric version of the current car in the US, but Fiat have stated that they will be heavily into BEVs in the future.

FCA already sell a electric 500 in the USA. You can buy one in California. I've seen one and touched it.

The last female I bought a drink for in California I ended up exporting to the UK

I clarified this later. I’m aware of the 500e, what I meant is that you won’t see a current gen 500e made for Europe.

Long story short, Tesla could change the battery twice in the time it took to fill a diesel car up with fuel.

The problem is that the standardisation of batteries required to make this happen is unlikely to happen. Sad, because it was my preferred solution.

In one go not often but often do -60-70 miles in a day so if be going out of my way every couple of days for several hours to sit and wait to charge the car up as I don't have facilities to charge at home
Can you not just plug it in?
Yes, it will take longer than a fast charge system, but why not have an outdoor waterproof socket?
When you get home, plug it in overnight. Could be 14hrs on charge overnight.

30A cooker or immersion heater supply? I don't know why that wouldn't work and it would be simple to do.

Because I don't have the facilities to charge at home I park around 40m from house cant have a long cable trailing through the street

Stupid FT, doesn’t let you link.

Google for this “Five ways to solve UK's electric car 'charging conundrum' | Financial Times”

Would be interesting to see a 500 electric, wonder if it would be possible to retro fit, saw an old wheeler dealers programme in which they retrofit an electric motor into a old Maserati

Ok, I understand that we don't all have a driveway in front of the house.
Sorry for making the idea simple for everybody.

Mick.

I think the summary of it all is that FIAT need to reduce the cost of their existing 500e, increase the range to 200 miles, and make it work with fast chargers - then roll it out in Europe and indeed the rest of the world. No mean feat really!

I don’t think a new platform is required; the existing 500 platform is ideal for a cheap small car, which in turn is an ideal candidate to be made electric.
