I have just serviced my 500 and whilst clearing up I found that the lube oil used was 5w-40PD fully synthetic turbo diesel oil and mine is a petrol. The shop said it will be Ok but I am frightened of destroying seals etc. what do you think.

Pretty sure it'll be ok just it's low ash which is not applicable.
most oils for petrols and diesels are much the same now, you could check the oil can and see what exact specifications it conforms to, then compare that to the specs in the manual, you'll likely find its all ok.
As Andy said, most oils are the same these days.

For the 1.2 you want any good quality 5w40 which has the C3 rating.... can be for both petrol and diesel.
The only issue I see here, is the oil should be rated C3
