Greetings. I have a US 2012 Fiat 500 (not Abarth) that has been giving the family some issues regarding the emissions system and smog checks this year.

It's a bit of a long story, as we've been on various adventures regarding trying to figure out exactly what is going on. We don't have many local fiat mechanics in this area, so getting help has been challenging in itself.

We took in the car for the usual smog check one day and it failed with these "not ready" OBD readings: EVAP and EGR. There were otherwise no engine codes stored. The Check Engine Light only flashes to indicate the "not ready" status but otherwise stays off during operation.

We borrowed a code reader and started running tests such as drive cycles, long drives, etc. All of the emission systems except for EVAP and EGR would become ready. Those last two are being very stubborn, no matter how much we tried. We even did the cold start trick a couple of times, where you hammer the system with AC, etc while idling.

Beyond this problem of not passing the smog test, the car seems to operate well.

Trying to google up this stuff has been frustrating at best, so I finally come here with my plea. Does anyone have any special knowledge of the EGR/EVAP fields?

I suppose to start it off, I have a few questions:

1. Does this car have an EGR system at all? I have been told by someone that it might not. If there is no EGR, is it normal that it is reported as "not ready" by a reader?

2. Is there any special advice anyone has for what kind of problems there could be that could cause the EVAP not to pass, yet not report any codes?

Otherwise, I'm afraid I'm at my wits end. I'll be happy for any advice anyone can give.

Hi,
We are mostly in the UK and the petrol cars here don't have EGR or EVAP fitted. I suggest you contact a Fiat dealer or main office quoting the VIN of the car and asking for confirmation of what systems are fitted. It's not unreasonable to report "not ready" for a system that's not fitted.
What state are you in and what state was the car first sold in? CA regulations are amongst the tightest (I had a 70's Jensen Healy in CA spec that included EGR. No idea how it got to the UK in the 80's though) while TX might be more relaxed.

Thank you for your information and responses!

rallycinq - it's a little over 37,000 miles as of now.

g8rpi - I don't know off the top of my head the car's specific place of birth, so investigating that sounds like a good plan. However, I can say that it was sold in California and is still living here as we speak.

If its just a communications error thats going to need some checking of the pin status within the various control units.

Unplug and check that the pins are straight and there. A pin that has pushed back can be a pain to find but very satisfying when you do.

If it is an emissions issue I think the low mileage may have a bearing on it.

These little cars thrive on being driven, and driven hard.

When was the air filter last replaced?

That's interesting information about the pins, thank you. We might just see if we can take a look at that, if it doesn't require too much squeezing around tiny spaces.

The owner of the car finally managed to get an appointment for a local fiat tech to look this thing over, so I guess we're hopefully going to be getting some answers, regardless.
