ok car is sorted now-

The lights on the dash came back on when I fiddled around with the "junction box" in the engine bay(fuse box) cleaned the fuse connectors and fuses with contact cleaner and hopefully its ok, worst case is that the fuse box needs replacing but we will see. This is the grey box on the right hand side of the engine bay.

The starter was not turning because the current for the solenoid goes through Fuse F03 and I was using little jump leads on a normal size fuse so it would fit in place of a jumbo fuse and the wires were so thin on the jump leads they were acting like a resistor hence no turning over(if that makes sense).

-need to put the dash back together now.

good to hear it appears ok, (y)

would you care to answer the earlier questions about how this came about.?

as I said earlier it's a FAR from common occurrence.. :chin:

(sounds like the stories of pressure washing the engine bay to me..)

It just happened, its my parents car and my elderly dad said all the dash lights went out but it still started and got him home, the next day it would'nt start and the lights were still not working. I had a look at it and replaced a couple of blown fuses(still dead) then fiddled with the junction box and it was ok- I should think the reason it happens is we are in west wales and its quite damp here and the car isnt in a garage, which it will be from now on. Pressure washing the engine bay is asking for problems..
