Hi, I’m new to this site and after some help!

I’ve bought the mrs a fiat 500s on a 63 plate as a suprise for xmas. The horn doesn’t work, previously the car had been broken into and airbags stolen. Someone has replaced the airbags but I’m thinking this is related to the horn being inoperative. What I’d like to know is, is the spiral cable on the indicator stalk assembly the part that works the horn?
I’m reluctant to replace the airbag on the steering wheel and still have the same fault.

Any help would be great!
Thanks

Have you checked fuse 10 in the engine fuse box and relay 3 in the same location first? The horn is routed via the clockspring and also usually has another connection under the airbag-it will be one of these things unless the actual clockspring has failed.

I’ve not checked it but I will have a look and check the continuity across the fuse.
Is the horn run via a multi plug on the back of the airbag? The spiral cable is part of the indicator/wiper stalk assembly I believe? Not keen on spending £150 on an airbag to find it’s the £40 stalks.
I know it’s been messed around with before I bought the car and apparently the airbag was replaced but it is the right one and all connectors fit ok.

This is the entire circuit

Horn switch on steering through clockspring
To bcu
Via relay and fuse
To horn

If its failed, its via one of these circuits

Have you had the steering wheel off to see if the horn wire was re-connected?

Thanks swifty, I’ve not had the wheel off as yet just the airbag. I take it the clock spring is the circular (spiral cable?) fitted to the stalks?
Hopefully it’s not the bcu.

Is there a connection behind the wheel itself then?

If the airbag has been changed it’s quite likely that one of the airbags has been caught under the spring that activates the horn. I’ve done this a few times. Really annoying. You have to be really careful to keep the wires out of the way when you push the airbag home.

Top tip for releasing the airbag. Get an old medium sized flat blade screwdriver and bend it by nearly 90 degrees in a vice. I have sat there for nearly two hours in the past with a normal screwdriver trying to release the clips. The bent screwdriver gets in at the right angle and it pops off. Three springs in total, one behind each hole in the rear of the wheel.

Is the black and red wire the horn connection? If so, shorting the plug (disconnected from wheel) should sound the horn? A simple test.

That’s great thanks. I’ll have a look but I don’t recall seeing the cable trapped but I’ll have another look.
If it’s not that I’m guessing at the clock spring could be at fault?
