hi i have a 2012 fiat 500 by gucci i noticed that 1st and 2nd gear is very noisy will driving its only done 14k:mad: the wife drives it mostly and she said turn the radio up louder

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This is unusual; these gearboxes generally run quietly for very high mileages without giving problems.

Barring the very occasional one with a faulty bearing, the most likely cause is lack of oil; the driveshaft seals have been known to weep. Check the gearbox oil level as a matter of urgency, as running when seriously low on oil will soon lead to permanent damage.

Noises in lower gears are, generally speaking on other similar gearbox types, caused by the input shaft bearing nearest the clutch. Topping up the oil level is an absolute priority as jrkitching said. If the correct FIAT/Tutela oil is not readily available, a semi-synthetic gear oil with GL4 rating will suffice - better to have something in there quickly even if non-genuine.

After that, if the noise persists, it will be worth repairing or replacing the gearbox before a possible complete failure, especially on a nice low-mileage car.

If there is any clutch shudder, that could be a sign that the input shaft bearing has failed in a significant way (either to leak oil on the clutch or to cause misalignment of the clutch) and requires urgent attention.

Sorry if all this comes across as alarmist.

I work within a fiat dealer the 500 gearboxes have notoriously weak gear syncos they are also quite common for the turret seal at the heat selector on top of the box to leak oil I would imagine you have a internal fault with in your gearbox I am afraid we get a load of them in my work and I am the lucky guy that get the majority of them to fix ?

thank you the car is to nice to get rid is checking the oil level in gearbox worth looking at first

phoned fiat dealer whom has serviced car all its life and the want £1800 he said thats cheap for a new gearbox

That is a bargain. VW wanted the equivalent of £16,000 for a new van engine- £7,000 for just the head.
