Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on an idling issue I am having.

I bought the car three weeks ago - it seems to run fine, but the idle is quite strange almost like the engine dies off then plays catch up. I have never owned an environmentally friendly car so I just assumed the engine ran this way to reduce emissions.

The car was in the garage for an airbag issue yesterday and they say the car should not be idling this way and it is possibly due to a breather pipe.

Any thoughts?

Marty

This has all the hallmarks of a vacuum leak, which a split breather hose is-there are 2 on the 500 and both are well known for splitting although newer versions seem to have cured this-the air filter connection to the small breather hose is very weak and even fiat techs have broken it off
Check this first-just feel to the rear of air filter housing-is the pipe attached?

The uneven running is the ecu trying to harmonise the fuel/air mix allowing for the extra air in the system.

How old is the car? Check the simple things first how good are you with a spanner, spark plugs always a good starting point like swift said check the breather hoses to the rear of the air box my small one had split and was chucking out gunk on the bulk head, later I snapped off the spigot for the breather hose, but was able to fix it.
Check the air box is correctly located it pushes down to lock in place at the rear, not just placed on and bolted down.

Hi all.

Got to the bottom of this today.

The pipework was all fine, it had been replaced recently - my garage simply reset the throttle (position sensor?) and she now idles and drives like a new car. Charge of the fix was £4 plus labour...very happy ?
