Putting new lowered springs on tired standard dampers will not give the best handling results and may accelerate wear in the dampers.
A complete kit of new dampers with coil overs allows adjustment to height and corner weight for better handling.

@306maxi has personal experience of doing this, and has posted some useful stuff on this topic in the past. A search of this forum using the search term 'coilovers' against his username may prove helpful.
There is a consensus of opinion here that better dampers are needed; the 500 is not so much badly sprung as badly damped. OEM parts quality in this area is mediocre at best.
