General MOT Time again !

General MOT Time again !

Just looked at this thread again. The reason I said it was a bit of a grey area is the government's website says the following:

"You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid.

If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to:

have the failed defects fixed
a pre-arranged MOT test appointment

In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined."

This suggests that you can drive a failure away if the certificate is still valid, but you could still be fined! If failing the test invalidates the current certificate, why don't they just say so?

Indeed, it is confusing.

So, today, my car passes the MoT, 30 days before expiry and so a certificate is issued and my MoT expires on 17 December 2018.

Now here's the interesting bit. I go onto the DVLA vehicle enquiry site and my car shows as having a valid MoT that expires on 17 December 2017....BUT, I then click on the DVLA MOT link which is a separate page, and my new MoT shows as expiring on 17 December 2018, so 13 months from today. The moment the MoT inspector input the details of my pass onto the DVLA MoT database, it updated straight away.

If my car had failed today, theoretically, I still had a valid MoT certificate for another month. So, I'm allowed to drive my car home, or to a place to have the rectification work done. All this with the possibility of being 'fined' if stopped. So, I wonder, if the car had failed, one part of the DVLA database, i.e. the MoT database immediately updates to show a fail (or in my case today, a pass), but the DVLA Enquiry database shows the car still has a valid MoT.....??

This all seems extremely muddled to me!

I pay £25 at Mr Clutch

£25 is a good price to pay seeing as the maximum allowable fee for most passenger cars is £54.85. Basically, garages can charge what they like to do a car MoT up to that maximum.

I've had family and friends pay just £20 for an MoT. My local 'trusted' garage, charge £40. Personally, I don't have an issue paying that. If you take your car to the local Council Depot, I think they charge the maximum allowable fee. Lots of the places near where I live, charge between £25 and £35. As far as I'm concerned, it's a once a year fee and my local garage has charged £40 the last 4 MoT's as far as I remember. For me, it's also the convenience of the MoT is done whilst I wait, no mucking about, it's in, it's out within around 45 minutes.

I see you paid the full DVLA price. A lot of the places where I live charge between £25 and £40. The first MoT is due on our Vitara next week, Suzuki dealership doing it on the 3rd service. They're charging us £39, which is a bit of a joke to be honest, considering they'll be doing a service on the car anyway. Still, they're entitled to charge the full rate if they want, so perhaps I shouldn't complain too much.

Not been closely following this MOT thread but this is the real fact / status

1) You MOT is only valid as a spot inspection on the day/date it is issued.

2) Under normal circumstances the MOT is valid for one year

3) At any point in time your vehicle can be deemed to UN-roadworthy. This will only really ever happen after an accident or if the police think there is something wrong with your vehicle

4) The police do not do MOT type testing/inspection but they can issues a roadside vehicle correction notice. e.g. you have a brake light out, headlamp out etc.

I'll take this to another level.

All commercial airline pilots do a full walk around air plane check. This has nothing to do if the last service/check was deemed OK. Of course they can not check 1000% all of the aircraft integrity but they have a duty (like you and me) to ensure we don't drive off with a deflated tyre.

Do you do every day the vehicle walk around that used to be in my day (1970s) to check that basically all is in order?

Enough said

I walk round my car every time i go out, mainly to check for/remove the bird crap it seems to be a magnet for, but technology has replaced most of the checks i used to do. And cars are far more reliable than they used to be.
