Morning all,

All I did was put a new nearside front headlight bulb in my 2012 Twin Air, checked the lights and all good. Went to start and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

EBD Failure, ABS Failure, Airbag Failure, your name it and when you try and start it, nothing.

AFter checking through the forum, I've disconnected the battery for half an hour, checked the connections and went to have a look at the hatch wiring, but of course that won't open!

I've been repairing and servicing my cars all my life (I'm an old fashioned mechanic) but this computerised nonsense is really getting me down and I've never had to call the RAC before.

I'm going to pull the battery and give it a charge, just in case that helps but, is there anything silly I'm missing before I get the car towed to the dealer?

First time I've been stumped I'm usually the one helping people with problems, not asking for help!

Yes that is maddening.
When disconnecting battery turn everything off first especially ignition , make sure key not anywhere near ignition (preferably not even in car)
Wait 3minuets after everything off before disconnecting battery.
This gives ECU to store everything it needs before battery disconnected.

I know it's only a bulb but how about taking it out and trying start.

Thanks Jack and Mercky,

yep, it does seem coincidental and with the battery out I have a much clearer view of the bulb and connections, so I'll check that through carefully...looks like I may have to buy a Multieuscan thingy, which doesn't help me getting to n important meeting on Monday and as a Mac user, I bet it only works with a PC!

I have an uneasy relationship with computers and can say MES is very useful.

While you have battery out check earth lead connections.

Good luck.

Thanks Jack,

I've downloaded the software onto a desktop PC I have running windows and I've ordered the leads and adaptors, so it looks like I'll be heaving it all outside unless I can find myself a cheap laptop!

Thanks Jack and Mercky,

Hi,
Where are you located? Maybe a member near you has Multiecuscan and can help.

Robert G8RPI

Thanks Robert, I'm between Bicester Oxfordshire and Buckingham...as you can see I've ordered the leads and stuff, and I'll try and grab myself a cheap laptop...it doesn't help me get going for Monday, but at least I should be able to sort it next week.

I'd better update my profile now!

Thanks Jack and Mercky,

I'm a Mac user too but I bought an old Dell on eBay for £50 just to run MES

Success!

How embarrassing is this? All those warnings were thrown up by a duff battery:eek: I checked the voltage, gave it a bench charge for six hours and it all looked good but still got an array of warnings and flashing lights.

Gave the battery a full test under load and it turned out to be shot. Put a new battery in and the old Twin Air is off like a rocket now, so thanks to you all, for your assistance and offers of help.

What a terrific forum, I've been lurking for a while and it's been a mine of information so next thing to check is that hatch wiring followed by pulling out the headlining to fix the radio aerial.

Thanks all!(y)

Don't be embarrassed.
Timely reminder for all to check the basics.
No one suggested possible duff battery , so you were not alone.

Good news that you sorted it. (y)

I too bought a Dell laptop secondhand for £50. Got it from cash converters or someone.

As for batteries, There's many threads on here regarding batteries and the Stop/Start system. We bought our 500TA at 18,000miles @ three years old and the SS didn't work properly so I bought a good modern battery charger and charged it properly ............ but still rubbish.

I bought a new battery, and that cured it, but over a year or so, the SS began to suffer, so since then, I've connected up the car to the charger every single time I get home. The battery is on charge permanently .......... either by driving, or by being parked on the drive.

As a result, three years down the line with a new battery, it is perfect. The SS will stop the engine for the full three minutes.

£100 for a SS battery, so it's worth looking after. :)

Best wishes,
Mick.

Thanks Mick, I have to say I always switch of the Start Stop, it drives me nuts, so maybe that's why the battery has lasted over five years before conking out!
