I started to swap out the starter motor on my mjet last night but came upon a slight hitch.

The service manual only shows that one bolt has to be removed however other threads regarding other 1.3 mjet vehicles suggest there's more than one.

The starter has 2 bolt holes, one easily accessible and the other not.

So I guess my question is, how many bolts are there?

So the starter has now been changed and the car is running.

It does in fact have 2 bolts, and one in particular is a real giddy job to get at.

I ended up bringing it to my mechanic as I just couldn't manage the hex bolt from the gearbox side. They had alot of trouble too and ended up stripping alot more than just the battery and ECU.

They charged me for 2 hours labour which is fair enough as I know it took them longer than that. Just a pity I couldn't do it myself.

Car failed to start this morning...Well not quite.

The car has been running fine since going to the mechanic last week. Got in this morning at half 7 to drop Jr round to nursery. No problems there and back.

Got back into the car at half 8 to head to work and got nothing. All previous symptoms returned.

Could i have been so unlucky to have bought a dud reconditioned starter?

Think i might just set fire to the car.

Was the original starter confirmed as the fault?

D
To be honest not quite. At the time I had explored all other likely causes.

When it was not starting at all a few taps with a hammer on the starter seemed to do the trick, hense making me think it was the cause.

Since being changed the car has been perfect up until this morning.

I can't work it out.

Sounds like an electrical problem to me. Has it been plugged into a proper diagnostic machine? I used MES when I had a sensor problem and it told me it was the pedal sensor. Proper diagnostics and a bit of digging and process of elimination showed it was the ECU. I would have thought that an electrical fault would throw up something on diagnostics.
