Its still the hatch wiring, depends on how far they went, a casual peel back of the flexible is not sufficient to establish if they're OK or not, sounds like the wire makes contact sometimes and others not.
... they repaired the microswitch in the boot handle...
Thanks everyone for replying. The sort of things you're describing all point to the hatch wiring. We had to take the rubber gaitor right off (both ends where it's connected) and only then could you see the spaghetti junction of wires hidden inside. Might be worth clarifying how much they pulled back.
I had some of the problems you've described, plus sporadic central locking fuse blowing when the wires made contact.
Thanks for that. Just as a matter of interest, I daresay that price wouldn't be from a Fiat dealer? If you do have the problem again, I do tailgate wiring flexy replacements for £120 fitted and also have a fix for the tailgate handle fault

Yes you are right. It's very inconvenient for me , having to do without my car and I rely on my father a lot. He has wasted a lot of time and effort taking the car back and forth. Obviously I don't want to spend more than necessary. I'm going to have to find someone / garage local to me in South London and go from there. It couldn't be a fuse could it? What was really gauling was that the problem didn't present itself yesterday( in the mechanic's presence) and my father was made to look like a fool.
No I make the repair looms myself, I've fitted lots of genuine ones and the only bit that needs replacing is the flexy.
