Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with some issues I've had with my 2012 1.2 Fiat 500 pop. Just for info I bought the car in October 2016 and it had 17500 miles on the clock, I've only done about another 800 since I bought it. For the past couple of weeks the mileage has been flashing, start stop has been unavailable and I've been getting a message saying fuel cut off on the dashboard. Apart from this the car has been running as normal. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what might be up? I've seen a few threads about flashing mileage and battery issues but none seemed exactly the same.

Thanks very much for any help!

Hello and welcome .

Sorry it's in such sad circumstances.

This sounds like typical symptoms of the quite common hatch wiring fault. Check the condition of this wiring before trying to run any kind of diagnostics as the diagnostics could give you a misleading result if this wiring is damaged.

The fuel cutoff message is quite possibly due to the airbag ecu not communicating properly with the CAN network - fuel cutoff in the 500 is implemented via the airbag ecu. Any fault in this circuitry makes it more likely that the airbags may not deploy properly in the event of a crash, so this really should be sorted out at the earliest opportunity.

Fingers crossed for you that it's just the battery, but from the combination of error messages, my money is on the hatch wiring.

Given that it is more than 3 years old, have you checked the date on the battery ? If it is more than 4 years old that would be my first check. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, is there anything I can do with checking the battery or will I need to take it to a garage?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem! I bought my 2010 fiat 1.2 lounge last week and now all of this has come up! And now my rev counter doesn't go back down to zero, it stays at 5000 when I turn the car off! I need help!

I bought a 2010 Fiat 500 1.2 sport last year with only 17,000 miles on the clock and after two days had many issues with the stop start etc. Had the battery checked at local Fiat garage and it was worn out. If it is the battery make sure you replace it with the correct amperage for the stop start system. I did and no problems since. Thankfully the dealership I bought the car off willingly paid for it !
Most garages I think will do a battery check for you.
I understand that many other issues can be sorted by disconnecting the battery for 10/15mins then reconnecting .
All the best
Ian

At 7 years old it's on its second perhaps even third battery, but assuming it's, it's second it's probably in a poor state, a new one is about £100-130 ss type.

Count on a new battery, almost definitely.

However, you may be ok if you disconnect the battery for a while and then reconnect.

There's a red button on the earth connector that you press and lift off the lead. Do this and then go for a cuppa/wine/beer/cigarette or whatever, then reconnect. You'll have to reset the date and time.

Doing this, cures many ills ............. but not all.

Good luck, and fingers crossed for you,
Mick.
